Thanks you for posting, This was a trip down memory lane as I grew up in Ottawa recognize a lot of the cars and people even though I had got out of it by the early 80's I still was around it.

It was big by me into the late 1970s. The cops hassled it out of existence.

After losing my license 2x, I discovered the world of stock cars and never looked back.

Big buck grudge racing was a big thing in the early to mid 1990s. I live close to a big highway and they would roll pro stock type cars off trailers and run. Mostly around 2 or 3 am. They had blocker cars to slow or stop traffic behind them.

We would hear them and watch from the bedroom windows. Every now and then, the cops showed up. Everyone split fast. There would often be 20 + cars just watching. The race cars went first, haulers and spectators were next.

I remember reading about New York city street racing being very organized, big dollar races etc, Like you said ex Sox & Martin Pro Stockers racing even a couple of Top Fuel dragsters. They are a number of articles on web sites concerning the The Connecting Highways.

Same time as me, I never lost my license but had my car impounded for having Slicks on once.

I recall watching a video/documentary about street racing done after hours in the industrial parts of Toronto.  I mainly recall a the main character whinging about getting caught with a NOx setup "yeah, it has all the pipes and regulators but its not got any NOx in the system!  Let me run!"  The "inspector" felt justifiably certain that the tank was hidden in the car.   I was engaged in the other side of the equation-if we stopped a car for suspicion of street racing and all the emission controls had been removed (like for a nitrous system) we'd impound the car for pollution control violations.  It was in Southern California late '70s-early '80s, for crying out loud.

My buddy had a hot Bullitt Mustang that I eventually owned. So one night we went over to the Conduit in Queens, he figured on making a few bucks.

We get there early..  it was already jammed with cars coming in on trailers... serious racers. We just sat and watched.
