Looking back through some old posts I was wondering why some of you builders re chopped the roof.

Can someone point out the fauts and where to re chop please.

I would like to build mine with a traditional chop so where are the problems and where to chop it please.

And when I get it done I will post some pics

Thanks all in advance, John

what i find interesting and a bit amusing is how the rear window is the largest one in the whole car

Dave

The rear window is so large because it's stock size. The curved rear glass couldn't be cut, so the glass and its opening were cut free and fitted back to the body intact. As for the chop itself, the side window openings look "funny", the door windows in particular. The openings seem to rise at the top going from front to back, reaching a high point at the B-pillar, then drop off again towards the rear. I'm not sure whether to re-chop the top or to just cut the window opening areas out, fix them, and graft them back in.

Thanks all! well there are a few ideas there, I want to achive the early look of the Barris and Ayala Mercurys.

Thanks for the link, I also have a couple of AMT Mercs so have plenty of options.

I might make it with a butted windshield and keep the rear screen bars, the only thing I dont like about the Revell Merc is the rear lights.

Cheers, John

This is a build from the early 80's. Sorry about the pic quality. It's AMT's with a scaled 4in front, 6in rear chop with slanted B-posts. I think it was cut into 7 pieces. Across, lengthwise, around that rear window, and I think I cut it to keep the peak above the windshield, plus the posts. The 1-piece rear window would be from a '50. Those dimensions are what appeal to me. I would like to chop Revell's Merc but haven't gotten around to it yet. This car was one of my first to appear in SAE back in '86 I think. What is invisible here are the crescent tailights from the AMT '57 that are set into the '53 Chevy rear fender tips molded to the Merc. Alas, a tragic victim of the horrific entertainment center collapse of '89. I still have the custom license plate made with the serial numbers from the bottom of a decal sheet.
