Lyle Willits Posted July 15, 2009 Posted July 15, 2009 I remembered having the idea of converting the Monogram '30 model A coupe to a '29, many years ago, using the cowl, hood and grille shell from the Monogram '29 Ford roadster pickup (Blue Beetle reissue). On Sunday, I pulled the old 80's issue of the roadster pickup down from the shelf and was surprised like a kid on Christmas morning. What I found in the box was a '30 coupe roof section that I had already chopped, the roof sanded smooth and the cowls cut from both kits. All of the '30 Model A parts were in black plastic - not green. Maybe they came from an original flat box from the 60's. I remembered having the idea 20 years ago but I don't remember starting the project. ( It's fun being this age,,,,,everything is new again.) So, I started glueing things together. I want to do a fendered version so I grafted the rear '30 fenders to the '29 fender unit. I'm going to bob the rear fenders about 3 inches. Black parts are from '30 Model A kit. Silver parts are '29 Model A pickup parts. Only thing I can't find anywhere is the trunk/rumble seat lid. Guess I'll use a green plastic one from one of the 3 other kits I have.
Foxer Posted July 15, 2009 Posted July 15, 2009 It's great having a head start on an idea like that! Only thing I can't find anywhere is the trunk/rumble seat lid. Guess I'll use a green plastic one from one of the 3 other kits I have. Now this is the real sign of age.. multiple rumble seats!
Fletch Posted July 15, 2009 Posted July 15, 2009 Lyle, I like it, I am always torn between building full fendered vs Hi-boy. Your full fendered version comfims that I need to stop by the LHS and buy another '30. Fortunately, one of the members of the club has a 1/24th '29 rpu so the next build will be a bit easier. I'm looking forward to seeing your build progress, I'm have no doubt that it will be outstanding as always.
Tommy Kortman Posted July 18, 2009 Posted July 18, 2009 I'm suprised you remembered where the kit was stashed! I cant wait the see it.

Nice chop and cowl graft! If and when I do a '29, it'll be a roadster that I've started and stopped more than once over the years. We'll see. Nice job on yours!
Dennis Lacy Posted July 20, 2009 Posted July 20, 2009 Hey Lyle, the conversion you did looks really good and I'm glad to see you going with full fenders. Is this one slated to be another traditional hot rod or more of a street rod?
my80malibu Posted July 20, 2009 Posted July 20, 2009 Lyle where did you make the cuts for the area by the windshield? Can you post a picture of that?.
