jjsipes Posted August 18, 2009 Posted August 18, 2009 Has anybody built the Revell of Germany Ferrari 250 GTO? I just got one and it appears like a nice kit. Plenty of parts, what I like. Looks like a number you have built the other manufacturers kit. This will be my first Ferrari that I will build in 15 years. Does anybody know of anything I should lookout for with this kit? Any problems or corrections that should be made? Any suggest would be helpful. I plan on making it Red of course. It will be a little while till I start this, want to get reference pictures first. Right now I have started the Revell of Germany Jaguar XK 120 kit. That too seems like an okay kit. The panel seperation lines look a bit wide but I know that kit is from a diecast.

Hi JJ This is a beautiful kit. Over the years several kit makers have released this kit from the same tooling. I don't know who really owns it. I believe Revell, Testors, and Protar all share that same tooling. My Protar 250 is identical to the Revell kit. Not sure about the Fujimi version 250. The old Airfix kit I believe is different. Have a lot of fun building it and sharing it with us. I haven't built mine yet, so I'll watch for upcoming progress, and see how yours turns out, and any problems you incure, and for tips anyone posts for you.
Zoom Zoom Posted August 18, 2009 Posted August 18, 2009 The current Revell/Germany issue is a reissued Protar GTO. It's a nice kit. Here's Dave Thibodeau's incredible GTO built from this kit The new Fujimi kit is a better kit overall, due to modern tooling, but the engine is simplified to some extent. It's the best looking GTO, especially out of the box. The Protar/Revell version out now is a bit weird looking, based on a rebodied GTO that was rebuilt after a wreck, the kit is accurate for that one car, but the rear fenders and tail end are a little off from the rest of the GTO's. Gunze made a couple GTO's (simple version and a multimedia kit), Aurora made one that was reissued by Monogram (and perhaps Revell Germany at one time), Italeri made one that was also reboxed by Testors. Several resin kits are out there too.
CAL Posted August 18, 2009 Posted August 18, 2009 (edited) Mine was building up into a nice little kit, it does have a number of issues, and mine has been stalled @ about 75% completed. Issues. 1. First it out of shape to an original 250 but represents a car that had the rear smashed off and reconstructed so it's pretty accurate to the car it was modeled after, but not so accurate to an orginal 250. 2. The top of the door frames too rounded. Correction flaten the top of the frame and fill roof gap. 3. Missing fuel lines 4. Missing aux breather/oil filler. Correction scratch build 5. Missing radiator lines. Correction scratch build 6. Soft molding on parts. 7. Cam sprocket covers, cam seal details Cut cam sprocket covers off, add bolt details and came seal. Add #4 at this time. 8. Missing PCV vent hoses. 9. Battery in the wrong location. 10. Tapper out the carb stacks - the hole is too small. 11. Completely missing brake master and tanks. 12. Missing interior door panels. 13. Suspension - sits too high, and doesn't help with the M&S truck tires. You can rebuild by flipping the knuckles and making new springs. Rear, you need to reform the frame to make it sit flatter against the trunk floor. 14. Rim bead too thick file bead down will make the tires sit better and look over all better. 15. Head lamp bucket is non-existant. Scratch build. 16. The taip pipe tips are completely wrong. Helpful hints. 17. Glue and fill headlamp buckets in first. It will be hard to get together with the lower valence on but it's the only way to properly finish the body. 18. Wiper arms are blobs. Note drill mount pins for easier insallation of PE wiper at a later time. 19. Fresh air ducts, screens missing. 20. Gear shift lever boot missing. 21. Missing seam where roof is put on at the factory. that't just going off the top of my head, and not being in touch with the kit for several months. I am sure there more I forgot, and much more I am planning on doing. The dash set up, for example, is a disaster. Build diary link. http://www.modelcarsmag.com/forums/index.p...;hl=Ferrari+250 The Fujimi kit is much better. Edited August 18, 2009 by CAL

Just depends on how deep you want to get in. I am sure it will look great finished. Mine look pretty good just sitting there in primer.
