This thing is a Big White Elephant, and I need to add some character to it. Do any of you have pictures of your weathered white race cars for reference?

Weathhering is weathering, regardless of the body color. Others here on the board have experience with weathering. I would imagine if you check out the Floquil paint line, they have a good variety of colors such as "grime" "mud" "rust" "dust" (rhyme unintended) that can be misted on with an airbrush.

Otherwise, I do have a fair album of Chaparral cars that may come in handy.

I see you are doing the second version of the 2D. Whose resin kit did the casting?

I am looking forward to your build... I built the first version

Spyder:

Your pictures are great!!!

They will definitely come in handy. I am going to stop in at my LHS today and pick up some grime, mud, dust and experiment with them tonight. I have a show tomorrow, and I am trying to get two finished up for it.

The kit is the Modeler's Kit. It is ok, it comes with metal tail lights, Mirrors, Headlights. I was surprised to see these in the kit.

These things were pretty bare when they were raced, I mean they had NO sponsor decals.

Thanks for the pictures. Great looking build BTW. What color did you use for the line around the tire sidewall?

The goldline Firestone tire decals came (IIRC) in the last issue of the Monogram Chaparral 2D. I believe Revell (or was it Monogram?) did a new decal sheet for that issue. The tires were first washed with thinner & wiped dry. After I applied the decals and let them dry, I shot the tires with dullcote. The rear wheels are from Perry's resin.

I have the Monogram curbside version of the '66 Daytona car. I'm going to carve up a 327 alloy engine to put in it along with aluminum stacks for the carbs. Still a curb side I guess, but you'll be able to see the engine through the fender wells.

dwc,

Great job on the 2D, especially the oil cooler ! I'm trying to build the Monogram Slot Car version with a rebop chassis and the reissued curbside kit. How did you get the decals to settle over the door handles, Solv-a-set, or another product ?

thank you,

Pete

I used solvaset, works great. Thanks for the compliments.

Well, Jim Hall liked to keep the outside of his cars clean. Unless you are doing a post race version. Follow some of the earlier suggestions.

Now, the insides were another story. The was all kind of dirty inside those white whales.

Here's a couple shots of my 2 that I scratch built from a Monogram slot car body. Don't take too much off for quality. It was done back in 1982 before there were any photo etch or AN fittings to be had.

I like to use ground up dry pastel chalk and a crappy old paint brush to apply weathering to surfaces.

I also apply it wet like mud with a hard bristle brush by flicking the bristles with a finger and letting the pigment fly.

Anyway, your car is nice as is.

 Looks pretty impressive to me, I already have the coupe. I may try my hand at the open car. Like I need to start something else.

Jim:

What a piece of rubbish that scratch built piece is.

I'd love to be able to build something so nice! If it was a kit based build I'd congratulate you on a very clean build up. When I consider its a scratch built (if I remember some magazine featured it), I'm in awe and have great respect.
