1320wayne Posted September 3, 2009 Posted September 3, 2009 (edited) Down in the Diorama section I have a WIP of a "Mopar Hilltop Garage" that I have been working on in recent months. The base is pretty much done and the garage is closing in on being finished as well. Now it's time to concentrate on what's going to go inside for a vehicle. Since the diorama revolves around Mopars and Drag Racing the subject will be a 67 Dodge Coronet bracket racer style drag car. Nothing real fancy. No opening doors or trunk or major scratchbuilding but just a simple drag piece with the extra needed detail. The body is a Revell 67 Coronet kit mated to a Revell STP Rickie Smith Firebird chassis. The engine will most likely be a Ross Gibson piece. The only major changes to the chassis were to cut the tops of the wheeltubs off to get the rear of the chassis to sit down right and to lengthen the front framerails to accomodate the extra wheelbase. The front tires and wheels are Revell kit pieces but the rear slicks I decided to try something a bit different. I am using 1/20th scale rear slicks from a Tamiya formula 1 kit. They are plenty wide but are also a low profile tire which works perfect here to also help get the ride height down. The rear wheels are two extra JPS wheels that I had just waiting to be used somewhere. The paint job will be something a little different but I will leave that until I pull it off. 1320wayne Posted September 3, 2009 Author Posted September 3, 2009 Nice ride. What motor is it getting? Ross Gibson 440 with a few extra race parts added in.
1320wayne Posted September 6, 2009 Author Posted September 6, 2009 Here are a few more pics. of the elongated chassis and what the tires and wheels look like. The front framerails were extended using brass tubing. I simply cut the kit framerails, left them intact so that I had material to slide the brass tubing over. This way it allows you to be able to adjust the wheelbase properly without worrying about your adjustment being too long or too short. Once you have it right then you simply glue the tubing in place.
1320wayne Posted September 13, 2009 Author Posted September 13, 2009 The paint work is done. I wanted a different red, white and blue approach so I decided to utilize the old "Swirladelic" idea. I went ahead and sprayed the body with a few coats of base white and then masked off the pattern and created the swirl paint scheme. I'm not sure where I'm going from here. Some sponsor markings but I haven't made up my mind as of yet.
Custom Hearse Posted September 13, 2009 Posted September 13, 2009 WOW Wayne! That's looking great! The rear tires look good. Surprised they're 1/20th. Does JPS still make and sell wheels? I'm looking forward to seeing more!
1320wayne Posted September 13, 2009 Author Posted September 13, 2009 JPS still makes wheels, I believe. You could probably find them at places like Detailmaster.com.
RodneyBad Posted September 14, 2009 Posted September 14, 2009 That is a Killer looking Paint job. I like your adjustable wheel base. saves a lot of trouble down road. Nice wheels too
BKIN10SECS Posted September 14, 2009 Posted September 14, 2009 I know this is just the tip of the iceberg...I expect nothing less from ya....very creative
1320wayne Posted September 27, 2009 Author Posted September 27, 2009 Decals are now added. I have an extra set of the Dodge scripts on the side that I intend to double up on to make it brighter.
Janne Herajärvi Posted September 27, 2009 Posted September 27, 2009 Looks great so far! Keep it going.....

oldscool Posted September 27, 2009 Posted September 27, 2009 Holy frijoles thats an awesome paint job! I can see abstract faces in the right quarter panel ( no, I havent been smoking anything) . Ive seen swirl paint jobs before but this one has such an intricate pattern to it that invites a close look. Did you use the dipping method?

Yes, just to be different though I went ahead and dipped it twice to see what effect it would give. So, there is a swirl on top of a swirl.
1320wayne Posted October 18, 2009 Author Posted October 18, 2009 Here is the latest update on this build. The engine is being assembled using numerous parts box pieces. The four speed is a resin piece from Top End Miniatures. The Hemi valve covers are resin pieces that I created. The intake is a resin piece that has been re-cast from a Ross Gibson Hemi Super Stock engine. The carbs are Revell pro stock units that I enhanced with aluminum tubing. The engine will be displayed outside the car hooked up to the engine hoist for the purpose of the diorama. All of the wiring and plumbing will still be added. The body has the grill painted and attached as well as some of the chassis work completed.
