Porky Posted September 18, 2009 Posted September 18, 2009 (edited) Building a copy of our uncle's 1961 BelAir the "Shade Tree Special" he has been racing this car since 1967. It ran in IHRA Super Stock 1I back in the day and still is an IHRA World Record holder. Set records in class they don't run anylonger so I guess it always will be. Last few years it has been raced in the "Classis Gear Jammers" series. It is powered by a 292 cu. in. chevy small block ( sleeved 350 block and a 302 crank ) turns it about 11,000 rpm's off the line, a real screamer. Here's what I am starting with Here's the 1:1 car I am shooting for Edited December 3, 2009 by Porky
Porky Posted December 3, 2009 Author Posted December 3, 2009 About done with the chassis, will add some more pics as the work goes along. Started with this,,, Done a bit of hacking & cutting,,, Added some back,,, Made up a rear end to fit,,,, Thats about where I am now,,,
Jason Vandergriff Posted December 3, 2009 Posted December 3, 2009 (edited) Good work Eric. I found a intake similar to what you are looking for in an amt Nascar. I have a complete motor if you want it. Will the body be available for sale anytime soon? Another way to build the 292 is a 60 over 283. Ive got a 283 here at the house on my engine stand that I need to put away before I lose the crank to rust. Edited December 3, 2009 by Jason Vandergriff
noname Posted December 3, 2009 Posted December 3, 2009 I'd like to build a high revving screamer like that for our 1:1 car someday. I'd like to see old pics of the car when it was first built. As far as the model goes, you've done a great job on the chassis.
Porky Posted December 3, 2009 Author Posted December 3, 2009 I'd like to see old pics of the car when it was first built. I will see if I get get some older pics of the car, I know he has some, it used to be green and had a shade tree on the truck lid with an engine block swinging from it, thats the way it was when I was growing up. I think he painted it the medium garnet red in the early 80's
Jeff Sauber Posted December 3, 2009 Posted December 3, 2009 Very cool project........ Nice work so far!!
roadhawg Posted December 3, 2009 Posted December 3, 2009 Excellent project idea, and really looking good so far. I DO have a question, though.....what do you plan to do about the decals?
Porky Posted December 3, 2009 Author Posted December 3, 2009 Excellent project idea, and really looking good so far. I DO have a question, though.....what do you plan to do about the decals? Thanks for the good words on the project everybody. I have a friend who is tryin to do the decals for me but is having trouble with them, If you or anybody else could make them or know someone that could it would really help. Our uncle has cancer and is not doing too well, I am really wanting to get this one done to give him. While he is still with us. Everybody around here loves his old car and I have 12 or 15 more to build for other people so I would be interested in at least 15 sets of the decals. Being I have so many to build I am casting most of the parts out of resin after I get them converted/mastered, like the chassis to keep from doing all that work over and over again. I am using a MCW resin body to do this one for times sake but I am converting a 61' Implala hardtop to a belair, gona cast it then change the roof to the post style so I can cast the bodies I need as well.
Porky Posted December 30, 2009 Author Posted December 30, 2009 Got the chassis finished and cast in resin, I have about 10 of these cars to build and did not want to have to do the chassis that many times. More pics soon.
Porky Posted December 31, 2009 Author Posted December 31, 2009 (edited) very nice job on the chassis! it was impressive to see in plastic and it looks awesome in resin. any chance you will offer that one for sale? could be very nice for guys who build Super Stockers and 10.5 tire cars. i know i'd love to have one Dave Hey Dave, I had thought about sticking the chassis on the web site, not sure on the price yet though. I will hook you up with one or however many ya need. Shoot me a PM and we will work it out, no problem. Hey Donnie, Thanks for the Good Words !!! Edited December 31, 2009 by Porky
vizio93 Posted December 31, 2009 Posted December 31, 2009 Nice job so far, it's looking tough with that stance
disabled modeler Posted December 31, 2009 Posted December 31, 2009 Hi Porky....NICE JOB on the body! the next one like it is crying out to be a straight 6cyl grandma car....would be different and still cool.
Porky Posted December 31, 2009 Author Posted December 31, 2009 Hi Porky....NICE JOB on the body! the next one like it is crying out to be a straight 6cyl grandma car....would be different and still cool. Hey Mark, Thanks on the body but its not one of mine. It's a MCW body. I am working on converting a 61' Impala Hardtop into a Bel Air, gona cast it and then cut the top off one and add the post roof and recast it to have the 61' Bel Air Post roof. I still have to figure out how to / the best way to add the Bel Air side trim back on the Impala thats where that project is at now, have a hard time finding the right scale stock to do the trim.
disabled modeler Posted December 31, 2009 Posted December 31, 2009 Hey Porky! will it have a roof like the project has?
Porky Posted December 31, 2009 Author Posted December 31, 2009 Hey Porky! will it have a roof like the project has? Hey Mark, Sure when I get the 61' Bel Air Post roof body done and cast it it will look just ike the resin in the post except it will have the Bel Air trim, I still have to add the side trim to the project car. Working on sendin ya those pics now.
Jason Vandergriff Posted December 31, 2009 Posted December 31, 2009 hows the chassis fit under the olds?
GOTH KUSTOMS Posted January 1, 2010 Posted January 1, 2010 This looks like it will be kewl when it's done, keep up the good work
Porky Posted January 1, 2010 Author Posted January 1, 2010 Rear Suspension is about done and ready to be cast,,,ladder bars, coil springs and shocks,,same as the 1:1 car. the parts are just set up and not glued so the shocks are not in the pics, could not get them to stay in place, they run from the rear of the ladder bar plate to the frame.
