curt raitz Posted October 8, 2009 Posted October 8, 2009 In a race car building mood lately here's one I've always wanted to build...Bobby Unser's Rislone Special, 1968 Indy 500 winner powered by a turbo charged Offy, just love the color combination and 1968 was a very good year for me: Here's all the goodies acquired to facilitate this build: Really sweet little engine... Top decal sheet is from IndyCal, bottom decal sheet is Fred Cady's (included in R&M conversion) I will be using IndyCals Really nice tires, definitely an upgrade to kit supplied rubber... Base kit, not an easy build - been there, built two Gurneys already. Having done so, should help in this build. All of the parts needed... Here be the parts painted, next step is applying the decals... stay tuned
Raul_Perez Posted October 8, 2009 Posted October 8, 2009 I knew that you had elves working for you!! How else could you go from a bunch of parts ready to paint to a bunch of painted parts in just a simple scrolling down of the mouse to the next picture?! Tell your elves to keep up the GREAT work!! Later,

randx0 Posted October 8, 2009 Posted October 8, 2009 I looked on Ebay and broke into my lhs I can't find any painting elves anywhere.seriously though I always like when you do these conversions .
Fletch Posted October 8, 2009 Posted October 8, 2009 Always one of my favorite Indy Cars. I wonder how many of us will be searching the tables and boxes at the next swap meet looking for an Olsonite Eagle kit to convert? I know My hands already up. But in the mean time I'm going to sit back and enjoy your conversion.
ismaelg Posted October 8, 2009 Posted October 8, 2009 AHHH AHH OHHH UHHH AHHHHH One of my all time favorites been done by one of my favorite modelers..... I want it! I used pictures of that car as reference for my Gurney Eagle, especially for the front suspension. Looking forward to see it done! Thanks,
simonr Posted October 8, 2009 Posted October 8, 2009 Jmmm..interesting stuff..this one is on my to do pile!...I'll be watching this one. Simón P. Rivera Torres
hot-wheels Posted October 8, 2009 Posted October 8, 2009 I get into that era race cars alot, mostly CanAm & LeMans. This is a cool project. Your build technique has me more interested than anything else though. Trim & clean all parts, paint & decal all parts, assemble all parts. I'm more used to trim, paint, glue repeat. Funny what inspires a person, I'm gona try it. I look forward to the completed project.
roadhawg Posted October 8, 2009 Posted October 8, 2009 I've enjoyed all your Indy builds, as you really have a knack for capturing these cars perfectly. Can't wait to see more!
ScaleCentral Posted October 8, 2009 Posted October 8, 2009 Very nice. I have this on my massive to do list. I wonder if they corrected the exhaust, intake issue when they did this. I've never looked that close at the kit. If they did, I need to make several copies of the engine, lol. Can't wait to see this done. I always liked the torpedo Indy cars. Nic
curt raitz Posted October 9, 2009 Author Posted October 9, 2009 AHHH AHH OHHH UHHH AHHHHH One of my all time favorites been done by one of my favorite modelers..... I want it! I used pictures of that car as reference for my Gurney Eagle, especially for the front suspension. Looking forward to see it done! Thanks, Well, I'm using the pictures of your Gurney Eagle as reference for this car... debating with myself if I'll redo the shocks as you did, I've never been able to pull that off very well, usually just try to clean up the ones in the kit and detail with paint...
curt raitz Posted October 14, 2009 Author Posted October 14, 2009 I finally got back to the bench after spending three days in San Francisco. Enjoyed participating in one of my other passions...golf! I worked as a volunteer at the President's Cup @ Harding Park. Was a lot of fun and got to see 24 of the best golfers in the world. anyway got a little more work done on Bobby's car engine and tranny: pre-assembled body with tacky glue to apply decals: Body panels with decals: front suspension, side body panels, interior goodies, engine and tranny in place: rear suspension attached: just need to finish wheels/tires, attach disc brake rotors, and remaining body panels,,, note: with all the careful calculations I put into getting the decals/paint right on this puppy, I still missed...both side panel decals needed to be moved forward, so the #3 would clear the rear suspension connectors oh well...there's always sumthin' thanx for lookin'
Fletch Posted October 14, 2009 Posted October 14, 2009 Sounds like a tough weekend Curt, from what I saw there was some serious golf going on down there in the Bay Area. Glad to see you're back at the bench.
Raul_Perez Posted October 15, 2009 Posted October 15, 2009 Another cool looking build, my old friend!! Where do you get the time??? I'm still looking at, (not working on), my '40 Ford and the '50 Chevy Z06 pickup... Between my youngest son coming home for the weekend and the usual array of "stuff" to do on the weekends, I'm not making any progress on any of my builds...except for that secret one that's nearing completion that I haven't told anybody about, yet... Later,
simonr Posted October 15, 2009 Posted October 15, 2009 Niiceee!...maybe this is the motivation I needed!! Simón P. Rivera Torres
