dwc43 Posted October 31, 2009 Posted October 31, 2009 Where can I get a cheap squirrel cage blower motor so I can build one. I checked the local Northern Tool and they don't have one. I don't recall seeing any at Harbor Freight either, but when I was there, I was not looking for one at the time. I might have missed it. Any ideas ??
Guest Gramps-xrds Posted October 31, 2009 Posted October 31, 2009 Why would you need a squirrel cage blower ? You plan on paintin more than models ? For models all you'd need is a good bathroom fan or a really good range hood fan.
Mr. Can Am Garage Posted October 31, 2009 Posted October 31, 2009 Better safe than sorry is why. Safe your pennies and OPM (other people's money - gifts) and buy a Pace.
dwc43 Posted November 1, 2009 Author Posted November 1, 2009 (edited) Better safe than sorry is why. That's correct. With a squirrel cage only the blades are in the air stream, so there is very little chance of fumes getting pulled inside the motor to cause a flash fire. And yes, I want to use it for more than painting models. I have shop that I build race cars out of and I occasionally restore a muscle car or two. I own a multi show winning Road Runner as well. A table top booth about the size of a sand blaster cabinet would work real nice. Edited November 1, 2009 by dwc43

I'm really wanting to build one for my specific needs though. At least I have there fan outputs to compare with what I want to use mine for. I might e mail them and see if they will sell me just a replacement fan assembly.
Greg Cullinan Posted November 2, 2009 Posted November 2, 2009 Mr can-am, I'm going to buy a Pace Peacekeeper. Will it eliminate small dust particles getting stuck to my fresh paint jobs?

All in all if you're going to do larger parts then a squirrel cage would be more effective.
crazyjim Posted November 2, 2009 Posted November 2, 2009 Use a bathroom exhaust fan. I modeled my booth after the larger Pace unit.
Brian_R Posted November 2, 2009 Posted November 2, 2009 Check Grainger for your motor http://www.grainger.com/Grainger/small-cen...N-8ta?op=search Brian
Aaronw Posted November 3, 2009 Posted November 3, 2009 (edited) I don't know how big you want to go or what you consider cheap, but I made my own this summer for $200 or so, 24" wide, 20" deep and 18" tall. I shopped around and mine is bigger with a much more powerful blower than anything else with a similar price. Grainger has a bunch of squirrel cage blowers at decent prices. They have awesome service, my blower was in my hands within 24 hours of ordering it. I bought a 485 cfm Dayton shaded pole blower (aka squirrel cage) for $144 + $6 for a 8' cord. It is fairly quiet and seems to do the job. It is part number 1TDR7, if you want a little bigger you can get a 549 cfm blower for another $20 1TDT2. I used a cheap furnace filter to catch the paint particles and 1/2" plywood to build the box, I used a piece of 3/4" plywood I got free out of the scrap bin to add support where the fan meets the booth, since it is fairly heavy. Thanks guys. I had not even thought about Grainger. I'll check them out and order me up a motor asap. Thanks again.
modelercarl Posted November 3, 2009 Posted November 3, 2009 If you are going to build your own booth check out a design that I found on Briansmodelcars.com that I built. It uses standard (inespensive) furnace filters and is built from 1/4" acrylic which provides maximum visibility and ambient lighting, plus has a closable door to protect the paint job while drying/curing. I used a Dayton Blower #1TDR7 from Grainger for it. I will try to post a picture for you (I am new to this site so not sure how it works yet).

And you have to post pics off site like photo bucket and then use the image button to put the link to your pic in the post. I dont know why they do it like that, but it's pain and takes a long time if you have multi pics to post.
