limoman39 Posted November 7, 2009 Posted November 7, 2009 I see some of you here that have some pretty realistic Holley Carbs. Was wondering if anyone could give me some guidance in finding the color to paint these. I have looked through the local hobby shops colors and everything they had at Hobby Lobby but didn't see anything that would make them look authentic. Assuming it is a mixture of something with something. I am talking about the grayish, weathered brass looking color of a real Holley. Appreciate any help. Thank you,
caine440 Posted November 7, 2009 Posted November 7, 2009 I was given a hint about using testors model masters jet exhaust #1796 and I think it looks good. Give it a try.
limoman39 Posted November 7, 2009 Author Posted November 7, 2009 Thanks Caine, bought some MM Jet Exhaust today. Painted up a couple sets of carbs, waiting for them to dry but they look pretty good already Thanks a ton for this tip.
Marc @ MPC Motorsports Posted November 9, 2009 Posted November 9, 2009 Tamiya has a Titanium Gold acrylic paint that is a good match.
dhale999 Posted November 10, 2009 Posted November 10, 2009 I use a little of the Clear Yellow used for marker lights mixed with a silver. If done right you get the slightly yellowed look of a newer Holley.
limoman39 Posted November 11, 2009 Author Posted November 11, 2009 Hey thanks guys, A lot of great suggestions, I used Caine's suggestion with the MM Jet Exhaust for my mustang. Might try a couple of the others in the near future. I really appreciate the help...
5500 Posted November 14, 2009 Posted November 14, 2009 For larger scale, I use 2 or 3 different tints, usually start with jet exhaust or magnesium base, then apply washes of gold, yellow and green (very little color added to thinning agent). Uneven washes wind up looking pretty authentic. Got the idea from an Eastwood automotive catalog (they actually sell tinting kits for 1:1 automotive restorations), tried it on a Big Duece triple carb set up, and have gotten positive feedback on the results. Just another option for ya. good Luck!
Blake Rogers Posted November 16, 2009 Posted November 16, 2009 I was given a hint about using testors model masters jet exhaust #1796 and I think it looks good. Give it a try. hey man wondering were did u get this kit i love it and what is it engine and everything?
berr13 Posted November 17, 2009 Posted November 17, 2009 I use a combination of Testors brass, with a bit of silver added. Recently, however, I found a bottle of enamel in a local variety store that looks good, too. It's Krylon Short Cuts, and the color is Antique Bronze.
dencon Posted November 17, 2009 Posted November 17, 2009 I brush painted these carbs with Testors Metalizers Burnt Metal. Then did a little bit of black wash.
