diymirage Posted November 29, 2009 Posted November 29, 2009 (edited) hey guys i finally started assembly on the firedome hemi that came with my 53 ford pickup (of course i wasnt gonna waste an engine like that on a ford) at any rate i looked around for some picture online and i am not 100% sure how the wires go, through the valve cover like a hemi should or underneath a cover like in modern twincam engines ? the valvecovers have a "firedome" script right where you would expect to put the wires so i dont wanna drill through there Edited November 29, 2009 by diymirage
Dragline Posted November 29, 2009 Posted November 29, 2009 The raised area in the middle of the valve cover is the wire guide/cover. You open up one end and slide em in through there. What's nice is you only have to slide em in and you're done. It wires the same as any Chrysler Hemi out there. Hope this helps. Bob

Jon Cole Posted November 30, 2009 Posted November 30, 2009 Looks good! But, don't forget... gravity! Be sure to give those wires a little "weight"
diymirage Posted November 30, 2009 Author Posted November 30, 2009 Looks good! But, don't forget... gravity! Be sure to give those wires a little "weight" will do i didnt want to try and move them around too much yet though make sure i give the gleu time to cure
BigGary Posted December 1, 2009 Posted December 1, 2009 All the 50's Hemis (Red Ram, Firepower, Firedome) came with those wire covers. Most racers removed them to make plug changes easier. They're strictly decorative. Gary

MikeMc Posted December 2, 2009 Posted December 2, 2009 hey guys i finally started assembly on the firedome hemi that came with my 53 ford pickup (of course i wasnt gonna waste an engine like that on a ford) Good call why would you want to stick a Desoto in a Ford when a SOHC Looks, Fits and Performs much better!!!
Eshaver Posted December 2, 2009 Posted December 2, 2009 Mike , I own a 1953 Ford Panel delivery and they weigh about 400 more pounds more than a comparable Ford Pick up. Mine actually came with a stock yet needing a total overhaul 100 H P ford Flathead in it . I pit a slightly used 53 Mercury Block in it's place . I have to tell ya pound for pound , that truck has done very very well. First and second gear will keep up in most traffic conditions . In third , it drops some but still keeps up to 50 M P H . I'm running a 3 : 90 - 1 rear so highway speeds of today are limited to around 55 . Now I aquired the truck in 1982. Iv'e put a good 100,00 miles on it since as I have been accross the United States five times in it ! Ive had numerous problems with the Ford Transmission . Still, the motor although using oil still performs . Id be hapy to put my Flat head up against any S O H C Ford in an endurence run . Yes , the more modern S O H C will out run it speed wise but outlast ? Umm, I doubt it ! Ed Shaver
Harry P. Posted December 2, 2009 Posted December 2, 2009 All the 50's Hemis (Red Ram, Firepower, Firedome) came with those wire covers. Gary Talk about being ahead of your time. Today the trend is hiding all the underhood "guts" under a sleek plastic cover. The Chrysler boys had that figured out 50 years ago!
gbdolfans Posted December 2, 2009 Posted December 2, 2009 Hi Eelco, Where did you get the firedome hemi??I have been looking for one for years. What kit did it come in? Thanks,George

diymirage Posted December 2, 2009 Author Posted December 2, 2009 Hi Eelco, Where did you get the firedome hemi??I have been looking for one for years. What kit did it come in? Thanks,George it came in the modified stockers hauler kit the kit had a 53 ford pick up truck with a trailer the truck had two options for engines, the stock ford flathead V8 and the desoto firedome the firedome again can be build in two different ways, with the fuel injection as it is shown here or with a log manifold and 8 seperate carbs (i used that set up on this engine) The plug wire covers are silver with red lettering. I own an old DeSoto. thanks i might change it from how i have it now im not planning on sticking it in a era apropriate car so im not to terrible concerned with accuracy at thist point but again, thanks for the tip
gbdolfans Posted December 3, 2009 Posted December 3, 2009 Hey Eelco and Mark, Thanks for the headsup on which kits have the hemi. I have a couple of ideas for projects using it.
evilone Posted December 3, 2009 Posted December 3, 2009 they go through the valve cover like a normal hemi but the part you are talking about goes over the spark plug wires/boots its for looking good only serves no real use for the engine kinda like chrome under the hood.
