seeker589 Posted December 10, 2009 Posted December 10, 2009 My question is with the John Greenwood Stars and Stripes Corvette - Sebring '71 kit. Does the kit include the clear headlight bubbles/bumps and the lights behind them? Is it the correct setup? Is there anyone who has duplicated these in 1/25 scale. In my opinion - you just can't do a late 60s or 70s Endurance Corvette without them!
Randy Kern Posted December 10, 2009 Posted December 10, 2009 Tim, I built that kit this year, here is a link to the under glass post.http://www.modelcarsmag.com/forums/index.p...c=19123&hl= The kit does have the clear bubble headlight covers, but the headlights are just decals for the stock headlight covers. Since that was the case, I decided to try to replicate the old racer's duct tape covering over the clear bubble covers. I used Tamiya 6mm tape cut in half, then painted Tamiya Silver for a pretty realistic effect. I do know that Reliable Resin has a trans-kit that includes the body with the headlight conversion (including bubbled covers), instead of using the hokey kit headlight decals. He had them on a few racing 'Vettes at the NNL East this year.
SSNJim Posted December 11, 2009 Posted December 11, 2009 I believe it's been done by the model companies before. I remember building a kit in the '70s that had the headlights instead of decals. I thought it was a John Greenwood 'Vette, but I could be mistaken. It's been a long time, and the model is long gone.

I remember a racing vette with the bubble head lights also, but like you I can't recall the kit.
ZIL 111V Posted December 20, 2009 Posted December 20, 2009 Remember assembling MPC Annual 1973 1/20 th Corvette with optional headlight covers for Road Racing version. ... MPC 1972 annual Vette kit (1/25) had the stars & strip "a la Greenwood" treatment on box art back then....but no headlight covers options
Casey Posted February 28, 2014 Posted February 28, 2014 There's a good review already posted at Cbyermodeler with pics of the kit's contents: http://www.cybermodeler.com/hobby/kits/rm/kit_rm_2825.shtml ...but the headlight covers themselves are clear molded pieces, as seen on the recently reissued "Rebel Racer" version:
Brett Barrow Posted February 28, 2014 Posted February 28, 2014 (edited) The bad news is the "lights" are just decals under the light covers. The good news is they kept the light covers covered in duct tape until they were needed. The Revell Greenwood kit has optional "duct tape" decals to replicate this. Somebody made a resin body with the proper lights, but I can't remember who for sure. Dare I say it might have been [cue ominous music] Reliable Resin!?!?! edit - should have read the earlier replies (I skimmed), and noticed the date of the OP.... Casey Posted February 28, 2014 Posted February 28, 2014 The bad news is the "lights" are just decals under the light covers. I was wondering how clearly you could see the headlight bulbs (well the decals of them at least) with the clear covers in place, or if there was enough distortion that it wouldn't make too much difference either way.

It looks pretty rough. You can't really tell what's supposed to be going on under there. I'm sure the 1:1 covers were made from thinner plastic than the 1/25 parts. This is what it's supposed to look like: If you sand the base of the kit's covers down and do the duct tape treatment it looks pretty decent.
Brett Barrow Posted February 28, 2014 Posted February 28, 2014 Several pics on here of racing Corvettes with the lights duct taped and un-taped: http://www.racingsportscars.com/type/photo/Chevrolet/Corvette.html?page=6
