I`m new to this hobby but have been lurking for sometime now in this forum. I've gotten a few kits & I`m just working out of the box for now. This forum is interesting & full of great how to info. I have read about resin kits or parts on how to clean glue paint &/or putty them, but why buy a resin body when one is supplied with the kit? It seems that in order to buy a resin body one has to buy a donor kit. Also the info in regards to the resin body is not supplied or info is limited. Is there a book on resins? You know info on how to cross reference on doner kits ect. exist?

I think the big thing with resin is that alot of cars are offered that are not offered in kit form or in some cases like the 64' Olds and 64' Falcon that I do they were only made in a kit one time and that was in 64'. To get either of those kits will cost you 120.00 + on the Falcon and 250.00 + most of the time on the Olds, so it would be much cheaper to build them in resin, not to mention that it took me over 4 years to find the 64' Olds kit that I have. Hope this helps a bit.

When someone buys a resin body to go with a donor kit the body is not a dirrect copy of the one in the kit.

Resin bodies are either a modified kit body like a 2 door hardtop into a four door wagon, or a body that is hard to find like Porky was talking about.

Resins are easier to create than an injection molded kit so if someone modified a body, they can make copies of it and sell them to other builders who can trade some cash for the work they would have to do to make the same thing.

A complete resin kit probably makes sense to you, but these 'trans-kits' just allow more options to the builder

I get resin kits caz they're usually of kits that AREN'T mainstream. Or in Porky's case They're ALOT cheaper than the original plastic kit that it was popped from. They're not hard to build, and all the HARD work has been done for you! :);)

Say you want to build an International Metro van. Nobody does a plastic kit of one, but you can buy it in resin from Motor City Resin casters and plop it onto a Monogram '50 F-1 chassis and have yourself one! ;)

Not only can using a resin body net you a rare car that's not available as a tradional plastic kit, you can also save yourself some work. Why chop that AMT '49 Merc's top yourself when you can buy a pre-chopped resin body that'll drop right on? Why spend hours filling and smoothing the hood on a Monogram '50 F-1 when a quick call to Replicas and Miniatures can net you one? And why scour your parts boxes looking for a Caddy/Olds 'Batwing' Air Cleaner when you can just buy one from Bandit resins?
