ZIL 111V Posted February 11, 2010 Posted February 11, 2010 ...Was wondering if the optional BOSS engine parts:(valve covers) in AMT's '69 Galaxie XL, kit, are accurate
george 53 Posted February 11, 2010 Posted February 11, 2010 Paul, depends on watcha mean by "accurate" Do they LOOK like Boss 429 Valve covers? Yeah, I'd say so, but they're LARGER than the ones that came with the engines in JoHans old Comet/Maverick Pro stockers. They look ok when compared to the ones from the old MPC kits. I guess it's just a matter of personal prefrence, but they look ok to me.
Eric Stone Posted February 11, 2010 Posted February 11, 2010 Do you mean accurate as a good representation of a Boss 429 engine, or accurate for an engine choice in a 69 Galaxie? I haven't looked at the kit parts to see how accurate they are in representing a 1:1 Boss '9 engine. As far as I can tell after doing some quick reading (but I could be wrong), the Boss 429 was never offered in anything besides the Boss 429 Mustangs, although the standard 429 "385 series" big blocks were offered in Galaxies. Here's a pic I took of a Holman-Moody prepared Boss '9- You can't see much besides the valve cover.
Eric Stone Posted February 11, 2010 Posted February 11, 2010 Sorry, I didn't read your post closely enough. Now I see you meant the engine parts themselves... Ignore the other half of my first reply.
weasel Posted February 11, 2010 Posted February 11, 2010 i don't think the Boss429 was ever put in a Galaxie, just mustangs IIRC... they did have a new 429 motor then, but not the Boss...
weasel Posted February 11, 2010 Posted February 11, 2010 but, if you want to put the Boss429 motor in a Galaxie, DO IT!!! great sleeper street killer... almost as cool as a SOHC motor in it...
ZIL 111V Posted February 11, 2010 Author Posted February 11, 2010 Accuracy of valve covers...they look a bit basic To be honest the optional BOSS valve cover don't look accurate to me, compared to 429 Boss web pics, like the one Eric posted....tought could be another "aftermarket" design No Boss 429 was available in 1969 for Galaxies, but Since will built as a street cruiser or mild custom would have put the the more "exotic"!!!Boss engine, just wan't to be sure before completing the engine block sub assembly... more common 429 Thunder Jet won't be bad either, but Boss would be nice...IF right valve covers.
george 53 Posted February 12, 2010 Posted February 12, 2010 Ok Paul, I just went and checked, and that kit DOESN'T come with a Boss 429. It has a 427 SOHC engine in it. The 70 Galaxie by Model King comes with a Boss 429 and it looks ok to me. The old MPC kits had a pretty good lookin Boss 429 engine in their Ford or Mercury kits. look in the old Street Cat mercury Cougar kits for a nice one. As far as the 427 SOHC engines are concerned, they are a completely different animal from a Boss 429. NO parts are interchangeable. But like I always say, It's just PLASTIC, an you can do ANYTHING you want with it!
MyBradKeselowski Posted February 12, 2010 Posted February 12, 2010 (edited) The Boss 429 was available for only the 69 Mustang, Galaxie's came with a 429 but only with stock valve covers, and was not a Boss... I know my uncle bought a new 69 Galaxie with the 429, and then later traded it in for a new 72 LTD with the 429... Edited February 12, 2010 by kaseykahne09
Harold Posted February 12, 2010 Posted February 12, 2010 The '429' in the '69 Galaxie is actually a dummied up FE (352, 390, 427, 428, etc). When I did mine, I pirated the engine from a Revell '70 Torino.
ZIL 111V Posted February 13, 2010 Author Posted February 13, 2010 Thanks to all, so 427 SOHC, tought the lower portions of the "427" in this kit looked a bit "flat", compared to other kits: "ribbed" lower portion 427 SOHC valve covers...(bit picky here!), &... where completly out of touch for a "429" Boss. Since not factory stock & OOB build, will put the box optional engine... ...Guess will have to "shave off" the "429" in side corner light script
