What color were the chassis and underbodies of the 69 Mustang when they were new? I've seen some that appeared to have a reddish primer underneath and still others with the floorboards and such painted what appeared to be the body color.

I'm just curious what the correct finish is for a factory fresh '69 Mustang Fastback. Any help and clarification is appreciated.

I think I have some 1:1 chassis shots of a '70 Boss 302 on my computer at home that may be helpful. If nobody has answered by this evening, I'll post em up.

Brian,

I built a 1969 Mustang Convertible a number of years ago. Using various issues of "Mustang Monthly" and "Mustangs and Fast Fords" as research material I painted my car as shown. You see... many of the readers back then would write in and ask about correct colors of this and that along with correct inspection markings. So this is as close as you are going to probably get.

Of course, I could be wrong on some of the minor points... but it won a few nice awards in it's day...

As Jairus explained, Ford used red oxide primer quite a bit on the undersides of Mustangs in those days. Here are a couple pics of the underside of a '68 Shelby showing the primer and the overspray....................

As shown in my article in the other Model Mag about on '70 Boss 302....Mustangs of this era showed underbodies in primer gray, primer rust, or what is called "slop" which was a primer apparently put together with the accumulated factory overspray from the exterior color paint booths, and manifested itself as varied shades of grayish/bluish/purplish/greenish primers depending on the car and what colors had been shot on the assembly line in the preceeding period. In any case, the bodycolor overspray from the sides of the car did carry over onto the bottom, as correctly shown in several of the photos above.

Hope this helps...TIM

Hey Jairus, you have some really nice builds there... I love that '69 Mustang Convertible, wow! You did a fantastic job on it... And that scratchbuilt T-bucket roadster is crazy cool!

Thanks for the replies guys. I knew you had done an article on the '70 Boss Tim, but I can't find the issue in my collection that had it. I agree with the consensus Jairus, your Mustang is one gorgeous looking car. I bet it would still win awards if you showed it today!

The 'Stang I am building is going to be black with a black interior so I will be going with the red oxide color of primer underneath with the overspray.

Thanks again for the pics and help!!!!

Heres a few more, not sure the year, only that its a mustang. It appears to be grey primer. When it comes to chassis, I would paint it in a manner that is appealing to me, regardless of correct or not. There seems to be alot of variation of color schemes of chassis and there doesn't seem to be a formula for getting the proper chassis color for any particular model/color combo. Every kit manual I have seem simply says to paint them satin or flat black even though I have seen samples to the contrary.
