DanielG Posted February 21, 2010 Posted February 21, 2010 Stripped of chrome and the cutting started.
jevries Posted February 22, 2010 Posted February 22, 2010 Cool to see these kinds of mods on diecast models.
DanielG Posted March 4, 2010 Author Posted March 4, 2010 Been away for a week where the temperature is a bit on the cold side! Anyhow, back to the bench. Did some more cutting today, getting the skirts removed and defining the size of the tail-gate.
RodneyBad Posted March 4, 2010 Posted March 4, 2010 Looked Pery good in the Beginning. Can't wait to see how it turns out.. Build on.
DanielG Posted March 5, 2010 Author Posted March 5, 2010 Well, not much time to do much today but got some more cutting and filing done. The box opening is now cut out and the filling and shaping for the roof is next (I think).
DanielG Posted March 6, 2010 Author Posted March 6, 2010 Managed to get the combing around the box done and glued on the roof. Funny thing though, I usually build the box before gluing the roof on, I hope there is no particular reason why! More filling and sanding tomorrow.
DanielG Posted March 7, 2010 Author Posted March 7, 2010 Glued and filled, using CA. Primed to show up the defects. More filling and more sanding! Almost there but not quite good enough, more elbow grease required.
DanielG Posted March 11, 2010 Author Posted March 11, 2010 Pretty much primered. Gutter to be added along the roof line and final sanding to come. Now to start on the deck which on this one I think I will be building on the chassis and try to get everything to line up under the body.

Really nice to see this kind of custom fabrication on die cast cars!
DanielG Posted March 12, 2010 Author Posted March 12, 2010 Sat around most of the day trying to plan the sequence of the deck construction. Chopped out some of the hump and added some of the deck support. We decided that we would give it a bit of a rake while we were at it and maybe put on some GMP wheels and tires or maybe not!
rustybill1960 Posted March 12, 2010 Posted March 12, 2010 WOW! I am impressed with the concept and I really dig the choice of cars. I really like Impalas, I have several that are on my list of to builds Really love what you are doing here! Thank You for sharing! More Please! Later Russ
DanielG Posted March 12, 2010 Author Posted March 12, 2010 Thanks, Rusty, Fridays are unpredictable, I may get a lot done or nothing, I hope to get the box completed tomorrow.
DanielG Posted March 14, 2010 Author Posted March 14, 2010 Well, I didn't get the box completed but managed to get the deck fitted and the wheel wells sorted out. It was after carefully getting all the supports leveled up that I discovered that everything changed when the chassis was bolted to the body!(sigh) Here you can see the separation of the box components to allow assembly and disassembly, something to keep in mind when doing these conversions. The fit so far, bulkhead detail and sides to be added yet and then the shaping of the box at the tail-gate, something still to figure out.
rustybill1960 Posted March 14, 2010 Posted March 14, 2010 Does not look like a problem from here Dude! Looking good! later russ
DanielG Posted March 14, 2010 Author Posted March 14, 2010 It is not evident in these pics but the bolsters for the chassis screws are set in awkward places in the rear, one beside the tail-gate and the other in the corner so that no one method of hiding them has yet presented itself to my poor old brain.
Guest Johnny Posted March 14, 2010 Posted March 14, 2010 A very ambitious project you have going here! As a lover of 58 Impalas I am looking foreward to the finished project! I have see two 1:1 58's that were turned into fantom ElCaminos (from wagons) at shows over the years and only one looked half way right. I like how you have incorporated the original coupe roofline into it. Make it very unique!
DanielG Posted March 14, 2010 Author Posted March 14, 2010 Part of the beauty of doing it for someone else is being able to bounce ideas back and forth during the build (but when it comes to the actual construction it is "... oh no, do whatever you have to do.)!
DanielG Posted March 17, 2010 Author Posted March 17, 2010 Well I've gotten it pretty much sorted out inside and added a bit of detail to the tail-gate. Primered and may start the body paint tomorrow.
DanielG Posted March 24, 2010 Author Posted March 24, 2010 Paint so far, this beast is driving me nuts! Repainted the hood twice so far, hopefully everything will polish up OK. Added just a bit of rake to lift the rear about 1/8 inch. Managed to fix the white-walls to an acceptable look.
DanielG Posted April 2, 2010 Author Posted April 2, 2010 A quick update (because I just know that you are all waiting...), having trouble getting the paint job finished, one heartbeat away from cleaning it off and starting over!
DanielG Posted May 11, 2010 Author Posted May 11, 2010 Finally, painted! Now to wait a decade while it cures before applying future.
Rick Forrester Posted May 11, 2010 Posted May 11, 2010 Dan , what scale is this 58. what are you useing to put it together with. like are you useing glues or other ways to metal and plastic together? papafo
