Just got this from eBay today and will probably be starting it next week sometime. I know there are 1 or 2 of these on here, but it is still one of my favorites from back in the day. It's Terry Labonte's #5 Kellogg's Monte from 1997 I believe. Revell's Lvl 3 kit. I'll post a few pics along the way and surely the finished product.

good choice... make a copy of the decals so you can cut them up to see where the 2tone lines need to be...

Hey dudes, sorry for the long time between updates. I've finally begun on the #5 and will try and finish this by next week (I've been short on funds and supplies needed to work on this). Here are a few pics of what I have done thus far:

First are the wheels. They have been sanded to make them look more realistic. They do not have the yellow edge on the rim because I did not figure out an easy way to do it until after I had finished them. Oh well. The small logo and lug lines on the hubs are present, though hard to see here.

Second is the engine in a not-so-accurate color. As I said, I am low on supplies so I made do with what I have. I don't think you'll be able to see much of the block anyhow.

Lastly are the headers. This color is a bit too dark so I'm going to try and lightly brush some transparent silver over them then blue them.

It's possible I'll have the engine completed tonight and I'll post more pics if I do! Thank you for looking and stay tuned!

-Justin

Edit: removed pics to free up quota. They weren't that exciting anyhow.

Got the engine done and as promised, here are the pictures. The pipes came out better than I had hoped. I first painted them copper which was too dark (see previous post) but I dipped my brush into the top layer of thinner in my jar of Tamiya acrylic silver and brushed a light coat over the pipes, giving them a realistic metal look. The silver flake collected in the contours as well and from afar, it looks like welds. Enjoy!

Finished up the chassis tonight! I know they all look the same underneath but here are some pics anyhow. The glue on the front end is still drying so I can't set the car upright yet. I'll post upright pics tomorrow (it's 1:30 a.m. so today?) when it dries and I can put weight on the wheels.

Looks like you're off to a good start Justin.

The engine and headers are looking good. One suggestion if you're up for it: spray your tires with a light misting of dull coat/flat clear. It'll set the decals on to the tire and hide the seams better.

A tip I'd heard one time for the stripe around the outer edge of the wheel, put some yellow paint on something hard (old cd case, stiff plastic, a piece of old glass or mirror, etc.just something that won't bend under pressure) and lightly press the edge of the wheel into the paint and you have the stripe on the outer edge. Just make sure the paint on the hard surface is not very thick, or it will go inside the wheel as well. Some of the older wheels had a red and yellow stripe on the outer edges, these are best done with a chiseled toothpick and a steady hand.

How about a very fine tip red ink pen? I've been using a black one to do grills and rims and such where you want it precise and in tight places.

That would work, too. I'd first heard the technique I explained way before the gel pens and such were out, those would be an alternative today.

That's exactly what I thought of right after I had already assembled the wheels/tires. It's no biggie, not every wheel in NASCAR has a stripe.

Thanks beef! I'll try that next time. What're your wheels going onto?

Hey Justin, one set went on a Monogram 51 Mello Yello Days of Thunder Lumina and the other on an AMT 15 Geoff Bodine Motorcraft Thunderbird.

Another method for the rim stripes is to take an Exacto knife and score the paint/chrome off to bare white plastic and then just color it in with your Sharpie:

I finished this over a week ago, just never got around to posting it. The pictures are horrendous. Sadly, my best camera is my cell phone camera (which is 5 mp). Just keep in mind that that is not pink. It is Tamiya TS-49 Bright Red, which is an awesome color. Yellow is Tamiya TS-something Bright Yellow or Sun Yellow, I can't remember which. Decals are kit, tires have been sanded, box-stock stance (which is perfect i think).

It turned out pretty good Justin. What's the next one going to be?

Thanks Nathan and everyone else for the kind words! Next is Danica Patrick's #7 GoDaddy Nationwide car. Built from an '05 Tony Stewart kit that i got from my LHS for $12! Have the engine complete and some of the chassis done waiting for paint.
