Custom Mike Posted March 8, 2010 Posted March 8, 2010 (edited) Here's my latest one to go in the display case, AMT's 1966 Fairlane GT/GTA. This is a great kit, with a few minor flaws, but I'm looking forward to building another so I can fix them a little better the second time. My biggest problem is with the hood, it's got too much of a gap at the front end, but it's too late to fix now, so I'll correct it next time around. I painted this with a nail polish (Neon Burst), and the white fogging was a happy accident. It was going to be blue down the side, thankfully it looked horrible. After stripping the bad paint, I re-created this paint scheme, wired up the engine, fuel line, brake lines, and battery cables. Dupli-Color Fabric and Interior paints was use inside, carpeting is flocked, and Detail Master Krome Foil was applied inside and out. A Revell Viper GTS gave up it's rims and disc brakes, and some aftermarket tires were swapped out for the Revell units. I got the decals from Keith Marks, but messed up the driver's side Fairlane script while waxing it. Enjoy the pics, and follow the links below for the WIP and more completed pics! nails3825 Posted March 8, 2010 Posted March 8, 2010 That thing is beautiful! I need to learn how to take my time building models, instead of slapping them together within a week I especially like your road, did you make it yourself? The trees in the background look dead on with the scale, that's a great touch!
oldscool Posted March 8, 2010 Posted March 8, 2010 That could pass for the real thing. The interior is very realistic looking . I love it. oldscool
Custom Mike Posted March 8, 2010 Author Posted March 8, 2010 (edited) That thing is beautiful! I need to learn how to take my time building models, instead of slapping them together within a week I especially like your road, did you make it yourself? The trees in the background look dead on with the scale, that's a great touch! Thanks for the compliments guys. James, slowing down does help out big time. The road is some stair anti-skid I picked up at Lowes, it comes with the yellow reflective stripe about 1 inch from the edge. I grabbed two of 'em, got some 1/8th plywood scrap I had, and laid it out. I added some model railroad ballast to the edges to simulate dirt, and nailed some 1x2's along the bottom edges to keep it nice and flat. I made one prior to this one using foam board, but wanted one a little more sturdy, so this one came into being. All totaled, it's in the $25 range, and made in about 3 hours. The hardest part is trimming the edges so the double yellow line is even, and sticking it to the board. You've got to be really careful aligning the cut edges, this stuff sticks really well, and is very hard to pull up once it is stuck down. As for the trees in the background, I just set the road up on my trash can, and set the aperature on my camera for 8.0, it causes the trees to blur out enough where the background fits just right! Peter Lombardo Posted March 8, 2010 Posted March 8, 2010 Mike, that is very nice...the color looks great on it. Somewhere in my huge stash of car mags, I have a muscle car magazine with that car ('66 Fairlane) in it built with a former Nascar engine in it that is also yellow, but without the white fade ( P.S. that looks great on yours) on it. Interestingly, a few years ago I built the 427 version of that car and opted for the exact same wheel and tire combo....I thought it worked nice on the car and they look great on yours. I also like now you followed through with the same color engine block. Very nice clean build.
Guest Posted March 8, 2010 Posted March 8, 2010 Beautiful! That is one of the best builds I have ever seen of that kit! That interior is second to none. Great work!
Jon Cole Posted March 8, 2010 Posted March 8, 2010 A common error on these Fords, the 'A' pillar should be chrome. Lucky it is easy to correct. I really like that fogged paint!

Jon, I downloaded a ton of pics of this car, and completely missed that little detail. Of course, so did AMT, there's no line at the top of the A-pillar either. I'll slap some more foil on it and call it good!
rustybill1960 Posted March 9, 2010 Posted March 9, 2010  Mike, those are some "primo" builds Man! I remember your firebird and camaro build from BMC some time ago and had wonder where you got to? Glad to see your still building and here! Thank you for sharing Man! You are truly an inspiration Dude! Later Russ
modelhut Posted March 9, 2010 Posted March 9, 2010 Great build. You really know your way around BMF. That interior is incredible! I am impressed. Great use of the background and display!

I've been on another Forum for a while now, but finally decided to check back in over here, gotta spread my sickness to you guys too! Great build. You really know your way around BMF. That interior is incredible! I am impressed. Great use of the background and display! Rod, believe it or not, I HATE doing BMF. It's a royal pain, but it just doesn't look right without it anymore! dimaxion Posted March 10, 2010 Posted March 10, 2010 I just missed out on a 1:1 brand new Special Order '68 Fairlane with a fogged custom paint job (from the factory) very similar to this . Outstanding model . Well done especially the Paint . Are those weld star wheels on this car ? Fits this model and your theme well . Thanx..
Custom Mike Posted March 11, 2010 Author Posted March 11, 2010 (edited) John, those rims are from Revell's Viper GTS kit, and the tires are from a set of aftermarket rims I had, they just happened to fit perfectly! Edited March 11, 2010 by Mike S.
hemi Posted March 12, 2010 Posted March 12, 2010 Dude That car looks stunning but all you did was coby that car from another site.

Hey Kevin, nice to see ya here too, now get back to work on the kit-bashed pickup and the Cobra! Everyone, this is the guy responsible for my 1969 Torino Tallagega's killer paint job. My current partner in crime, he got this Torino Cobra from me, now if he could find the time to finish it.....
Nick Winter Posted March 13, 2010 Posted March 13, 2010 Boy that looks great, I've built 2 of the '66 Fairlane GT/GTA's one as a '66 GT and one as a '67 Ranchero GT
sigmaman Posted March 15, 2010 Posted March 15, 2010 Sweeeet! Love that paint. I've built both versions of this kit. Got heaps of reference material. Fixed the too low windsheild on the second one and still missed the chrome A pillar. Easily fixed with foil as pointed out.

Tristan, I'd love to see your fix for the windshield, I'm not much of a "perfectionist" when it comes to kits, as long as they look good, I'm happy. but now you've got me wondering what's wrong with the windshield on this one. Show me some pictures, I'm dying to know now, I plan on doing this one again...
