dryvr12 Posted April 7, 2010 Posted April 7, 2010 So I have this resin body. Directions say to soak in westleys white wall cleaner (which I dont have) to remove the mold. What mold? Can I use something other than w.w. cleaner? It says to use alcohol to. What order, or mixed together? And does purple power hurt it at all?
Ragnar Posted April 7, 2010 Posted April 7, 2010 (edited) Castrol Super Clean, or Formula 409 Cleaner will work just as well! Any of the Purple Cleaners will work. I have used Alcohol 91% to clean bodies also, but it takes longer. CHEERS! Edited April 7, 2010 by Ragnar
astroracer Posted April 7, 2010 Posted April 7, 2010 Please read this thread... http://www.modelcarsmag.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=28944&st=0&p=281754&fromsearch=1&#entry281754 YOU DO NOT have to soak your model in anything... Just clean it as I describe and you will be fine... Mark
Howard Cohen Posted April 7, 2010 Posted April 7, 2010 Warning! Some resins will turn to mush when soaked in Super Clean or any of its clones! I use 91% or 99% rubbing alcohol that I get at the drugstore. Just make sure the container is completely sealed or the alcohol will evaporate. Another method I use is just washing the resin with Ivory liquid soap and warm water, then wet sanding out any imperfections with 3200 grit paper and rinsing.
MikeMc Posted April 7, 2010 Posted April 7, 2010 Zack...you are not removing mold...rather the mold release agent...this is slippery stuff that is between the casting and the die...it lets the part "pop" out of the mold....YES you need to clean it well. Also you will need CA or epoxy to assemble.
dryvr12 Posted April 7, 2010 Author Posted April 7, 2010 So just to clarify, purple power WILL work? Dawn and mildly hot water will work also?
astroracer Posted April 7, 2010 Posted April 7, 2010 Use the Dawn, some hot water and the Isoprophyl Alcohol. That will get the piece clean enough for paint. Remember to keep the model clean when you are spraying it. Wiping it down and then handling it with dirty/greasy fingers will not give good results. Use some fine or extra-fine Scotch-Brite to rough up the surface for primer. You can do this after the first good bath. Don't sand on the body before washing off the mold release because this just grinds the mold release into the surface. Mark
