I would suggest searching "Building and Detailing" on Amazon.com. There are several books there which were written by members of this board. I myself have "Building and Detailing Scale Model Trucks".

I know testor used to make a pretty good detailing book

I have Pat Covert's "Building And Detailing Scale Model Cars". That is really great book and gives lots of good ideas for building, painting and so on. There are lots of stuff from the basics, for example choosing right tool for different jobs, all the way through to detailing, and polishing etc. That book helps alot. Well, I haven't read it to the end yet, but I'm pretty far, and I can say that it is a great book. And even I, 14 year old Finnish guy, can understand, what the book says...
