Darin Bastedo Posted April 20, 2010 Posted April 20, 2010 In a dream last night a realization came to me... The most war torn regions of the world are lacking something that more peaceful nations have in abundance. Hot Rods! Places like Afghanistan, Somalia, Bosnia, etc. have no Hot Rods. Instead of sending diplomats and military advisors we shoid be sending speed shops, and mechanics. Imagine the change, "hey, you ready to go bomb the market?" "no the chevelle is running rich and I have to get it figured out before fridays cruise in" "hey we need to use you car for a car bombing" "are you nuts? It took me five years to build it and I have ten grand in the paint alone!" Is it just coincidence that after world war two, the young men came home and after seeing what war could do, started building hot rods/ It was as if they knew that hot rods were the key to world peace. we only have to look at Sweden, one of the most peaceful nations in the world. They have a thriving Hot Rod culture there. look at the most violent dictators in the world, none of them were hotrodders, yet guys like Chip Foose, Ed Roth, Boyd Coddington Troy Trepaniar etc. they never invaded a neighboring country or lead a military coup. We as hotrodders have a chance to change the world. next time you are given a chance to give a gift subscription to hot rod, Car Craft, rod and custom or other hotrodding magazine, send a subscription to a foreign leader. who knows there may be a Nobel Peace Prize in it for you.
Chuck Most Posted April 20, 2010 Posted April 20, 2010 It is a great idea, and it may well curb some of the animosity in the world, but I'm not sure it would kill it entirely. Still, I like your thinking!
charlie8575 Posted April 20, 2010 Posted April 20, 2010 Give people hobbies, the freedom to pursue them, and the economic freedom necessary to produce enough income for hobbies, be it cars, arts, sports, whatever, and it will occupy people, tending to give them something else to do besides cause trouble; after all, why do you think so many teens end up having problems, and such a disproportionate number of them are poorer? Lack of opportunity to do something productive, personally or otherwise. More productive economies tend to be more peaceful because people have less reason to be upset, curbing violence as well. Interesting thought. Charlie Larkin
Bainford Posted April 20, 2010 Posted April 20, 2010 Hhhmmm.... I think you may be on to something here. This makes sense on several levels. Hot rodding; the recipe for world peace. I like it, but the world reserve of flathead parts is limited. I guess we'll just have to send all of the small block chevys we can find to the middle east.
Darin Bastedo Posted April 20, 2010 Author Posted April 20, 2010 It is a great idea, and it may well curb some of the animosity in the world, but I'm not sure it would kill it entirely. Too True there would still be that Ford vs Chevy thing to deal with, but it would be a start.
Wagoneer81 Posted April 20, 2010 Posted April 20, 2010 Darin, I like the way you think! I thought the same thing Charlie did when I first read the post, he's definitely got something there... most of the war torn areas of the world right now are the poorest and be it for political or religious reasons, the most oppressed. I nominate Charlie and Darin for the Nobel Peace Prize! Darin, what Ford vs. Chevy thing??? I choose to play both ends against the middle there as my daily driver is an AMC built Jeep Wagoneer. I get the best of BOTH worlds!!! Well, all three worlds if you include the Chrysler 360 and 727 transmission...
diymirage Posted April 20, 2010 Posted April 20, 2010 Too True there would still be that Ford vs Chevy thing to deal with, but it would be a start. that is such a silly argument who cares who is second ? ford or chevy mopar will always be first anyway
Nick Winter Posted April 20, 2010 Posted April 20, 2010 that is such a silly argument who cares who is second ? ford or chevy mopar will always be first anyway I prefer Fargo.
Junkman Posted April 20, 2010 Posted April 20, 2010 I would be surprised if there weren't any Hot Rods in Bosnia. Honestly now.
Darin Bastedo Posted April 20, 2010 Author Posted April 20, 2010 ...there were blown up and burned out cars and trucks littering the streets. Dave Or perhaps he just wasn't a very good car builder and those were is old projects.

Chuck Most Posted April 21, 2010 Posted April 21, 2010 that is such a silly argument who cares who is second ? ford or chevy mopar will always be first anyway Well, not if you're talking long-term corporate viability, dependability, and/or customer satisfaction!
diymirage Posted April 21, 2010 Posted April 21, 2010 Well, not if you're talking long-term corporate viability, dependability, and/or customer satisfaction! nope, im talking about cars that only need to last 1/4 mile at a time
