The Modeling Hermit Posted April 27, 2010 Posted April 27, 2010 I recently finished a model using an article from an old magazine. The magazine was from 1973, and the article is probably more popular now than it was then. While I was building, I kept wondering if the person who wrote it would ever have dreamed that it would be that popular. I just want to thank those who go to the work to write and research these articles.
iBorg Posted April 27, 2010 Posted April 27, 2010 Curious as the magazine and the article. I agree those who take the time to share advance the hobby. Mike
Eshaver Posted April 27, 2010 Posted April 27, 2010 Sooooooo, Douglas , uh what did you write about ? In 1973 I was too busy with College and trying to do a part time job in a body shop ! Ed Shaver
Jairus Posted April 27, 2010 Posted April 27, 2010 Doug, some of the writers of those articles are very much alive today and members of this and other forums. I think it would be nice of you to name the issue and writer if it is not asking too much. About the only Model Mag still around then that I know of had to be "Car Model". SAE didn't start until '79 and MCS ended with the June '72 issue. Some well known names from the era that I can remember were (tho some have sadly passed): Phil Jensen Dennis Doty (Still writing now for MCM) Richard Carrol Tom Gaffney Lee Gilbert (Lost in the PNW) Jose Rodriguez Jr. Bob Paeth Jimmy Keeler (Still building but rarely writes) Philippe de Lispinay (Writing a book) I know that there are more and sorry to have forgotten someone. (Jimmy I know you read this stuff... please keep writing!)
The Modeling Hermit Posted April 27, 2010 Author Posted April 27, 2010 I should have been more specific, but I have a topic related to this posted, and I didn't want others to think that I was attempting to bring attention to it. This stems from an article in the March 1973 issue of Car Modeler magazine, by Phil Jensen. It was called, Build the Holmes 750 twin boom 25 ton wrecker, by Phil Jensen. In the world of truck modeling, this article has achieved cult status. My attention wasn't to point out a certain individual, but to acknowledge the hard work and research that goes into these articles, and to thank those who submit them for their efforts. I also want to let them know that there are people that do use those articles, and that they're still used many years later. March 1973 car modeler
Scott Colmer Posted April 28, 2010 Posted April 28, 2010 I have that issue!!! I actually hunted for it on Ebay for quite a while until I found it. When I was 11 my dad brought that and a couple more issues home for me. He said someone was throwing them out so he saved them for me. WOW! What an influence those magazine had on me. At that time I was a 1 kit, 1 tube of glue, and 1 Saturday afternoon builder. Those magazine opened up a whole new world to me. I dreamt of building a contest model. The Moon Cube article by Ira inspired me to build my own trike body from sheet plastic. That radically shortened 40 Ford was copied in a 33 Sedan delivery and a 40 Sedan. The delivery lived to be cleaned up years later. Here are some of my favorites from that issue. Sorry, but I haven't scanned Tim Boyd's Washington best of show. And I do wonder what happened to Steve Anderson's Grand National Winner. I'll have to scan pictures and post in another thread. From the Magazine Hosted on Fotki Hosted on Fotki Hosted on Fotki Hosted on Fotki Reading Ira's article on the Moon Cube ... Hosted on Fotki Gave me the inspiration to build this trike from scraps of overhead lighting panels. The bumpy side was used for "fabric". All pretty crude, but I like what it meant and that I still have have it. Hosted on Fotki This Shorty 40.... Hosted on Fotki Inspired me to take a hack saw to a 33 Willys sedan. It was later resurected and with a LOT of clean up, made into this.. Hosted on Fotki Thanks for helping me remember that great mag and all the inspiration I took from it. Scott

I went to school with him back in the day and got back in touch with him last year. Ahead of his time in the 60's. Bill Barrett Member TSSMCC
Jairus Posted April 28, 2010 Posted April 28, 2010 Doug, That is funny because I was pretty sure that was the article you were referring to as soon as I pulled out my 73's issues! The main reason I put Phil's name at the top of the list... I built this from another issue that year. Actually built three of these cars when the first, I felt, contained too many errors. By the third one I got it Korrect! Took me a while to get the whole series of issues via eBay since the build up was published in multiple issues. I don't know about anybody else but I will now go searching for your "Twin Boom Wrecker".
Scott Colmer Posted April 29, 2010 Posted April 29, 2010 (edited) Jarius, That was the other issue that my Pop brought for me. You did a great job on the slot car from the Lee Gilbert how to. I only copied the clear wing. Great article. Here are the Holmes cover and a few more pages. Great stuff. Scott Hosted on FotkiHosted on Fotki Mr Boyd Hosted on FotkiI would love to see this in color now. Must be like wining the GSL. Hosted on Fotki And a bonus... This is the last Richard Carrol showing I know of ..NNL West early 80s. Some guys on the showrod site found him and posted some interviews a couple years ago. Interesting stuff.
