I was messing around with an AMT '60 Chevy street machine P/U and made a new project!!

The problem with the '60 is the front suspension is still stock height.

So I got the truck down to a respectable level and had a thought,

The AMT '72 pickups always had a terrible, toy like chassis so I did a test fit and voila! another mouth to feed!!

It's a short box too. Should look cool if I can pull it off.

I got the box cut. Kinda tricky, I had to cut behind the wheels as well as the front of the box. Because the frame sits a little high I had to raise the floor a bit to get the box to sit right. I'm going to try to keep the body as original as I can (as a shorty). Just for giggles I cut open the doors.

Ron,

that looks great, I really like were this is going? I have a question though, how do you do your hinges?

Hi Nick, this is part of an article from the 2002 Car Modeler magazine. If you get the chance, get the mag, excellent article on opening everything on a model car. There's a white and blue '62 Tbird on the cover.

This is how to make small clips to hold open the doors etc.

Ran into a small problem. The floor of the '60 model is molded to the frame but it only has detail on the bottom. So I'm going to have to detail the top but leave it attached to the frame so the cab will drop onto it when it's assembled. The cab sits a bit low so I had to make steps in the bottom of the door openings.

Im enjoying your build you are doing an excellent job. But i feel compelled to tell you that the type of hinge you are using is the wrong type. This type of hing makes the door swing out from the car as opposed to the door swinging inside the front fender as it should. Just take a look at the way a door opens and you'll see what I mean. I have made a hinge that corrects this problem and I would love to show you how to make it using the same materials you use for the hinge on your truck. I hope i didnt offend you in any manner. The truck is coming along great. I have to say that I appreciate seeing the positive criticism, along with the offer of help. I hope as time goes on, that when I post work-in-progress pictures, there will be someone that will give correction and an offer of help as well!

I thought just reversing the same type hinge would change the door swing. I'd like seeing your solution. :)

... and Customizer has earned that name as far as I've seen! What beautiful work you've been treating us all to!

ok heres the tute I promised you. Keep in mind that im not giving dimentions as these will be totally up to you, I just want to show you the shape and materials needed and you can fine tune from there.

Here Are what you will need

HINGETUTT002.jpg

Ive cut the door completely off (in a hurry to do this tute) you will have to bend the wire in a sort of "U" shape like the one pictured hereHINGETUTT003.jpg

Again the size is up to you as long as you have the shape correct this hinge will work

HINGETUTT004.jpg

Position the wire on the body of the car as shown and put the tube on the wire on the door side. DO NOT glue the tube on the wire but DO glue it to the door as this will serve as your swivel point.

HINGETUTT005.jpg

When the glue is dry it will make your door swing inside the fender the proper way

HINGETUTT007.jpg

Heres another cool feature of this hinge...If you ever need to take the door off you can with out having to destroy the hinge and possibly the body

Romell, thank you, you're a lifesaver(modelsaver?LOL).Don't know how that happened, I used to own one of these. That could have been nasty to find after it was done, being a bit of a perfectionist I would have been compelled to fix it. I like your idea for the hinge, makes painting a breeze when the door lifts off. Thanks.

Foxer, I could just reverse the hinge I'm using but I would have to be careful of the horizontal mounts on the fender. If I made them too long they could be seen inside the fender.

Looking good like how it is turning out lots of custom work that

makes it look killer can not wait to see it finished. Might have to

try and open a few doors on some of my kits now that I know

how to make hinges that will work.
