I can get a load of square styrene tubes for cheap but im wondering if it will be thick enough for constructing chassis'.

Its is 2mm square which seems to be the width of most of the moulded chassis rail on stock chassis.

If you're using it for framerails, it's gonna be a little too thin. 2mm = around 1.8 inches in 1/24th scale

what would you recomend then? 4mm, 6mm ect.

It depends on what you're building, really.

I'd say on average, 2mm wide would probably look ok (still a little narrow IMO), but you want them to be around 4mm tall. If you can only get the 2mm square stock, maybe you can put 2 pieces together and fill in the seam.

Like I said, it really depends on what you're trying to build.

Most square (rectangular) tube chassis are 3" x 4". Your 2mm is pretty close to two inches, so it's going to be too narrow, while 4mm will be too wide by the same amount. If you can find 3mm, that should be fine. Or double up the 2mm and sand it to reduce the width. From my math, 3mm by 4mm should be pretty close to what you usually find in the real world.

2mm = .0787" For 1:25, multiply .0787 x 25 = 1.9675"

My thought on it is this;

Never pass up free styrene. even if it won't work for chassis tubes it will come in handy for something.
