Bridgebuster Posted June 17, 2010 Posted June 17, 2010 I'm not sure exactly what they are called . . . projection headlights, HIDs or whatever, but you guys know the new generation of headlights I'm talking about. Has anyone used some of the "bead" components from HobbyLobby or Michaels to simulate that type headlight? If so, what product and what size did you use. Thanks, Phil
Longbox55 Posted June 17, 2010 Posted June 17, 2010 You might take a look at cabochons (I think I spelled it right. They're basically like the faceted appliques they sell, exept that they are smooth and domed, not quite 1/2 a ball in shape, with a mirror backing. I've seen them in 5 and 7 mm, I beleive they might have had a 3mm as well.

CAL Posted June 17, 2010 Posted June 17, 2010 (edited) MV Products lenses most often found in model railroad sources. Edited June 17, 2010 by CAL
Kaleb Posted June 17, 2010 Posted June 17, 2010 What about actual LED? You can get them cheap off ebay and they are domed...If you hook them up you could add a smaller dot in the middle of the led to simulate "Halo Projectors"

What section are they in? In other words, what will find them with. Thanks!!
sjordan2 Posted June 17, 2010 Posted June 17, 2010 Why would you use rhinestones with cut facets? Are the 1:1 headlights like that?

Jon Cole Posted June 19, 2010 Posted June 19, 2010 MV Products lenses most often found in model railroad sources. Here is what MV Lenses look like. They have many diff. sizes, and can be found in the model railroad section of a well stocked hobby shop. Search on-line for sizes available.
Longbox55 Posted June 19, 2010 Posted June 19, 2010 Good luck finding MV lenses. They haven't been very good about getting stock out there recently. Went to 3 different shops looking for some for a freind, only 1 even had any kind of selection at all, and they didn't have the size we were looking for. All 3 shops were well stocked shops in the Indianapolis area, with 1 being a RR specialist store. Got the same story for all 3, MV was lagging on shipments. Online may be the only reliable way to get them. I will say, though, that cabochons have 2 things over MV lenses for projection beam lights. 1, they cost far less, and 2, they actually look like projection beam lamps, which have a very pronounced dome shape to them.
mountaindewd Posted June 19, 2010 Posted June 19, 2010 A search rendered this. http://www.discountmodels.com/m.v._lenses.shtml
horsepower Posted June 20, 2010 Posted June 20, 2010 I found LED lights down to 3mm in size, in red, clear, & amber at the local model railroad supply store, I agree that these look very much like the newer projection lights that many cars have gone to, & they can be wired to operate easily using a watch type wafer battery.
