Robert81 Posted June 22, 2010 Posted June 22, 2010 I have DSL, but my Computer is getting up there in age. I love to view this forum and the great builds on it. BUT sometime oversized and large numbers of images Pictures cause My cumputer to freeze and crash. It really hurts the enjoyability I have here. I'm sure I'm not alone.

BUT sometime oversized and large numbers of images Pictures cause My cumputer to freeze and crash. It really hurts the enjoyability I have here. I'm sure I'm not alone. I have an old computer also but never have any problems with this site. I think the pictures are reduced any way by the program for this forum. I had a old 400 mhz computer and never had any problems with it either
puddingwrestler Posted June 22, 2010 Posted June 22, 2010 That all depends on how you add them. If you attach them, they may be size modified. If, like me, you upload them somewhere else and then link to them, they are not resized in anyway. I always resize down to 800X600 using GIMP or Photoshop, but I have seen people who simply upload from their cameras - this means there pics are generally at least 2000 pixels across, making them considerably bigger than the screen. So if you are like me, and upload your pics to your own web space and then link them, get yourself a copy of GIMP - it's free, and use that to resize images. It's very easy, and provides a good opportuntity to review your pics before you post them, and also allows you to crop them so that they only show what you want them to. You can also generally improve the clarity of the picture by adjusting things like white balance and light levels to get the pic as close to life as possible.
Robert81 Posted June 22, 2010 Author Posted June 22, 2010 I know My computer isn't very good any more, But I found that a few posts with lots of Images won't load fully for me. There are a couple Post about Fox Body Mustangs in the "1:1 reference section" that will freeze my computer solid. As for Image size, they start the size the person uploads them at, then the board re-sizes them to fit the board. Again with lots of Images it takes longer to do.
Harry P. Posted June 22, 2010 Posted June 22, 2010 It's not the computer that's the problem, it's your internet connection and/or the web browser you're using. If you're using an old web browser, say a year or two old, that's ANCIENT in technology years! Older browsers can't handle new websites that are based on new web languages that didn't even exist when the older browsers were new. Either download the very latest version of whatever browser you use, or download the latest version of a new browser. Personally I use Firefox, but just about any browser out there will work fine, but you need the latest version available!
Kaleb Posted June 22, 2010 Posted June 22, 2010 IE8 would be the latest, I dont know about oprah or firefox. As in a older version browser that you may have websites were coded in html(simple code) most now are css, xhtml, Along with this Forum if your java script is not updated it will make it slow.
whale392 Posted June 23, 2010 Posted June 23, 2010 Sorry about that Robert; the threads and pics in the 1:1 FOX reference you are talking about are mine. I have a Photobucket account and I just image link to it when posting here (as I am NOT computer smart at all). Whatever size this site and Photobucket decides on is what posts. I have an older machine and it takes a few seconds, but all of the pics do load up for me.
MrObsessive Posted June 23, 2010 Posted June 23, 2010 I'm viewing this forum running Verizon DSL with a Dell computer built in '07. I have the latest version of FireFox (I hate IE8!) and have never had a problem viewing pics here or with other sites for that matter. Yes, you MUST have the latest browser and the latest Java software updates to get things to run smoothly as Harry mentioned. What's nice about Firefox is that it will update automatically if you'd like. I also find Mozilla to be a bit more user friendly than IE8 despite what Bill Gates says!
Robert81 Posted June 23, 2010 Author Posted June 23, 2010 I think it's more My computer than anything. I'm running Mozilla Firefox version 3.6.4, but My computer is a HP Pavilion 515n, never been upgraded, Window XP, AVG anti-virus, and all updates set to automatic. I'm on the local Provincial Phone Company's (telus) DSL. Whale392: it's not your fault. My computer needs to be turned in to a foot rest, just don't have the cash to replace it.
MrObsessive Posted June 23, 2010 Posted June 23, 2010 Robert, how much memory are you running? You might to try to bump up the RAM a notch...........that may help speed things up a bit. You can check here for inexpensive memory upgrades.

That is the exact system my wife has, only on high speed cable. As mentioned above I did have to up grade the memory because it was getting slow. That said, those photos on The Fox body are a little large @ 1024x768, most forums want them under 600x so dial-up uses can have a chance to see them. I use Fotki and they allow you to set the size for all the photos in that album. AzTom
GOTH KUSTOMS Posted June 24, 2010 Posted June 24, 2010 On my forum I ask members to keep there pictures to no bigger then 700x700, just becouse of that dial up reason, now I do have gimp, but dont know how to use it, I also have Irfanview, its the same as gimp, free, and easy to use, even on my laptop under IE8 it gets a lil slow, loading those huge pictures, but hasnt froze on me yet....
