Rider Posted July 6, 2010 Posted July 6, 2010 Great work, I'm working on the very same kit. I built this back when it first came out in '79-'80, great kit, molded in yellow/black fit was real nice. It's nice to see these kit come back, too bad molds do what they do over time. If and when you build the sleeper, the fit is real spacious. You might want to just glue everything shut and fill in the gaps.

cowboysevens Posted July 6, 2010 Author Posted July 6, 2010 HEY NOW!!! This big dog still uses rattle cans! lmao!! you know what i mean, i should never have used testers "######-in-da-can" thats the second can that messed up my model biulding enjoyment, they are out with theyre spray cans as far as im concerned. but i really do wanna learn to use my new airbrush , ive had it for 4 months allready. them things aint cheep when you buy the full meal deal, air compresser and multi pressure gun with choice of bottle or bowl. HIGHWAY YOU ARE STILL A BIG DOG BROTHER!!!

HIGHWAY YOU ARE STILL A BIG DOG BROTHER!!! I just had to get you on that one!! The only Testor's sprays I ever use anymore is the new lacquers, they come out very nice compared to the regular junk. Of course, I have an airbrush I've been wanting to use too, but it's just a little cheap one with air in a can that I've had for 4 years. I'd say get some brake fuild and give that body a bath, and if you do get the airbrush figured out, spray it with that. If you go the rattle can route, get some DupliColor at the auto parts store, it's never done me wrong!
Jim B Posted July 6, 2010 Posted July 6, 2010 The only Testors I use are Model Masters. They seem to work well. For most of my painting I use Dupli-Color, Krylon, or Tamiya rattle cans. No airbrush here! Woof!
cowboysevens Posted July 6, 2010 Author Posted July 6, 2010 well im stuck using testers paint, but im gonna use the airbrush. i used 1124green on the frame and i want the stripe on the truck to match, the rest of truck will be white with maybe a blue pinstripe on both sides of the green stripe. and the cab and hood are allready on the soak. to be cleaned and reprimered with duplicolor of course. it would be nice if i could get atleast 1 of these biulds painted!! lol
m4A3E2 sherman Posted July 6, 2010 Posted July 6, 2010 Dennis i to was once afraid of my air brush but i just picked it up and just started painting. and i had agood friend give me a lot of help. he tought me to put in 2thirds paint and one third thinner. for enamel and 60-40 for acylic. plus 1or2 drops clear dish soap and we use alcahol for thiner. the dish soap breaks down the surfice tention of the paint.well enough of that i hope it helps you.

I have not build a complete kit since 1995 so I am in the same boat. Jump in feet first with the airbrush. I am warming mine up as we speak!
SpreadAxle Posted July 7, 2010 Posted July 7, 2010 I like what you've done so far. I still use rattlecans depending on what I'm doing. I still use Testors on occasion, mainly for frames and such. I try not to use it for bodywork.
Old Albion Posted July 9, 2010 Posted July 9, 2010 Dennis, The 4300 is a great kit. Now that its been re-released its competitvely priced so more people have access to it. This is evident in the number of builds that we see. They are superb kits and a lot of fun to build. It certainly looks like your having fun and making a good job of things. Don't worry about the airbrush. The only thing you have to overcome is the price. Once you get this behind you your away. Dave
Kostas Parchas Posted July 9, 2010 Posted July 9, 2010 Nice rig you have there in progress. I like the detailed interior! Kostas.
cowboysevens Posted August 31, 2010 Author Posted August 31, 2010 well i finnally got the paint figured out on this one, decided to color match the frame but with metal flake. still gotta paint the cab, wet sand then clear coat. then i should be able to button it up!! lol 6 months later
ntc8733 Posted August 31, 2010 Posted August 31, 2010 Speaking of using brake fluid, does that caused glued parts to come apart?
cowboysevens Posted August 31, 2010 Author Posted August 31, 2010 Speaking of using brake fluid, does that caused glued parts to come apart? so far ive found nothing takes glue off, best way to get peices apart is to set in freezer so it will get brittle. lol i still end up with carnage!! dennis

All paints are diluted with Testors enamel airbrush thinner. This is my preference I dilute 50 / 50, paint / thinner. I have been airbrushing for almost 20 years and love it. It will give you a chance to prepare any color paint you want. I use very seldom spray cans. With Testors spray can you should not exceed 2 coats. Most time the fist coat goes on well. The second coat will often orange peal. To avoid this you can put the can in a bowl with hot water from the tap not warmer than that. Shake the can a few times till you fell all the paint inside the can is warm. It need not be hot just warm. It will make the paint in the can more fluid and the pressure of the propellant more constant. Hope this helps. Daniel Gailloux
cowboysevens Posted August 31, 2010 Author Posted August 31, 2010 i got the cab painted, now i need to wet sand and clear coat. cant wait to get this one done!!
Ben Posted August 31, 2010 Posted August 31, 2010 Looks like the paint turned out nice Dennis! It kinda looks like Calypso green which is an IH color. Not sure if they used it on the 4300's but they did use it on the 9300's. Jerry at ModelTruckin.com sells factory stripes for the 4300 in different colors if your lookin to add some stripes to it?
