Monty Posted July 13, 2010 Posted July 13, 2010 Doing some Google searching for some specific paints that I can't seem to find on the internet. 1) Polly Scale "Graphite" P/N 501999 from their Metalline Series. I bought the original bottle about 10 years ago, and it's about empty. There don't seem to be many places who carry Polly Scale paints, and I haven't found any that had this P/N. The Floquil version looks much too dark. 2) Polly S "Gray" P/N 500817 (label also shows 36622) These are specific shades that I've become accustomed to using for specific purposes over the years, so I'm hoping to find them again. All helpful responses appreciated.
VW Dave Posted July 13, 2010 Posted July 13, 2010 (edited) Monty - My LHS is usually very well-stocked with Polly S/Floquil paints, and I'm pretty sure Floquil is local to me as well(coincidence?). Good shop to deal with, and I'm sure they can help you. You sir, have a PM. Edited July 13, 2010 by VW Dave
highway Posted July 13, 2010 Posted July 13, 2010 Have you tried any of your LHSs that deal mostly in model trains? One of the LHSs in my area has both a nice selection of model trains and model kits, and they carry Polly Scale paints. I would say since the Polly Scale paints are geared more toward model railroaders, the model train LHS would be my first stop. I do think my LHS does do mail order, here's a link to them: http://www.tandkhobby.com/index.aspx If you can't find it on the site, there is a toll free number on the home page. I'd give them a call, and they are great to deal with! I should know, I've been dealing with them ever since I started building 25 years ago!
Brett Barrow Posted July 13, 2010 Posted July 13, 2010 Both of those paints have been discontinued a very long time, Polly "S" almost 20 years, and the Polly Scale Metallines about 15. (1)Vallejo 865 Oily Steel might be a good candidate, it looks a lot like my chip of #501999 Metalline Graphite. (2)FS# 36622 Gray is now shown as #505394 US Tac Lt. Gray in the Polly Scale line.
Zoom Zoom Posted July 13, 2010 Posted July 13, 2010 The Metalline colors were dropped when they were bought out by Testors. They were by far the finest metallic paints for brush painting details, nice finely-ground metallics, they covered extremely well, with hardly a brush stroke visible. Nothing else available now comes remotely close. My bottles are essentially all used up. By the time I realized what happened, I couldn't replace them. I would have bought multiple bottles of each had I known they would have been unceremoniously dropped. Thanks, Testors
Lyle Willits Posted July 13, 2010 Posted July 13, 2010 I was VERY disappointed years ago when Polly-S discontinued the metallics. I have been using Citidel paints since and they are VERY similar to the old Polly-S metallics. They are in most hobby shops. They have "dungeon & dragon" type names, i.e., "bolt gun", "chainmale", etc. but they duplicate aluminum, steel, etc. I use them to paint mag wheels, headers, engine parts, etc.
