Jim Gibbons Posted July 23, 2010 Posted July 23, 2010 Very, very cool! I remember seeing this car at the New York Auto Show in '73 (might have been '68, but pretty sure '73) I sold VW in the mid '80s, and World Wide Volkswagen (the last independent distributor of VW, since absorbed by VWoA) had some classic VWs on display, and this was one of them. I'd see it when I'd go to training seminars, new product introductions, etc. I've always wanted to see someone tackle this. It's a bit beyond my skill set!

Cool that you saw the original one! I think on the model I will keep the same style, but making some modification. Because of your experience with those VW I think you are the best person for ask about the color, what do you think, paint it in white or silver? I saw some pics of another one in yellow, but I still think that the white and probably the silver one are the best. Think that I almost sold this kit on ebay, and while I was waiting some parts (screws, bolts etc...) from my brother to use on the Alfa, I removed it from ebay, and looking for an inspiration for it... Came up that pics, so here I am... Here the pedals, and gear stick... The front and rear finally attached... Taking shape... Thank you for looking!
highway Posted July 23, 2010 Posted July 23, 2010 That is one unusual subject! You are capturing the look very well, and that will sure stand out in a crowd. Of course, I don't think the real one would be good to drive when it's raining!
Danno Posted July 23, 2010 Posted July 23, 2010 Wild! What an unusual model. Can't wait to see it completed.
CrewDawg15 Posted July 23, 2010 Posted July 23, 2010 Now that is not something you see every day...a daunting task, but it looks like you have a handle on it. Keep up the great work

(I put the ? in, as there have been a number made over the years) was painted white. I think it would look best that way, as it tried to simulate the wrought iron outdoor furniture look that was painted white more often than not. I wish I had bought my camera during the times I was at World Wide Volkswagen, as this car always delighted me. As with the original, I'd suggest cutting out the vents above the engine cover and using them. Why they bothered including it is beyond me, but I guess they wanted a bit of the original sheetmetal to be included as a visual item (that and it probably housed the decklid hinges and springs). Go, man, go...this is a treat to watch as you progress! Edited July 24, 2010 by Jim Gibbons
MoparWoman Jamie Posted July 23, 2010 Posted July 23, 2010 I'm not much into VW's but this one caught my eye and I'll be watching to see how this one turns out. Your doing a good job man at your build so far.
Brizio Posted July 24, 2010 Author Posted July 24, 2010 Thank you guys! Today I made kind of a big work, now the side are done and also the roof... And I started to bend some metal for the hood and trunk. Tomorrow I'll take some pics...

Go, man, go...this is a treat to watch as you progress! With original I was referring the 1/1... White stand out also better on the black chassis/interior (excluded seats). Nice idea to use the original vents, But I don't know if make it with or without... I'll decide about it, when the trunk is done. Probably also I should repaint the rims white, and also the the black parts on the engine...
Brizio Posted July 24, 2010 Author Posted July 24, 2010 I can't make the vents! because I already did the roof and rear window... And I don't want remove all and redo it...

VWs have always been modified or customized over the years. I remember a magazine my father got in the late '50s, early '60s, Foreign Car Guide, which specialized in VW, and one issue had a stretched Beetle chassis with two front ends on it. I'll have to look in storage; I may still have that issue. I wouldn't worry about the vents; this car defines air-cooled!
VW Dave Posted July 24, 2010 Posted July 24, 2010 I've seen 2 of those 'wrought iron Bugs' in person, and I'll be keeping up with this build for sure. Nice work on an offbeat project!

Before start this build, I searched on google some pics, and saved them for an inspiration. Those pics are what I found. Joe Gomez and his VW... Others... This one was in a movie. And who knows how many there are out there.

Brizio Posted July 24, 2010 Author Posted July 24, 2010 And here some pics of the work I did yesterday on this VW... Now it has a hard top, I think is better in this case, than convertible... This one a mock-up with the original body, just for have an idea where bend the wire for the roof... And here roof done... Still need hood, windshield, trunk, and side step... Thank you for looking!
Tony T Posted July 24, 2010 Posted July 24, 2010 Very interesting subject! The VW "Wedding" cars are pretty unique. Great subject, and great execution. Nice work so far!
MoparWoman Jamie Posted July 24, 2010 Posted July 24, 2010 Ding dang! man, that is very very good! I like it alot and I like how you bended the wire like you did.. good job! I'll be watching this one to you finish it.
Brizio Posted July 26, 2010 Author Posted July 26, 2010 Found also this one with fender, that was in a movie. I still prefer without... Probably they had fender for a "safety" reason.
sjordan2 Posted July 26, 2010 Posted July 26, 2010 Well, I don't know if this is a convertible, but it certainly is an "open air" vehicle. Astonishing work.

But It is not a big deal, I have other speedometer decals, or I can painted it. Plus three different license plates. A old Califonia (black/yellow), a California BUG 69 (blue/yellow) that I think to use it, and a Illinois one (beetle)... And of curse tons of flower and peace decals... If you like, just copy & paste these speedometer pics on a Word page, shrink them down to size, and print them on photo paper. I found them by doing a Google Image search: I usually paste several copies of each gauge, each at a slightly different size... one of which should be sized correctly. VDO gauge: The same deal works for small stuff such as licence plates, etc. You may luck out, meaning if the speedo diameter happens to be 1/4", use the same size hole punch to cut out the image, and glue to the dash. EDIT: Sorry, the pics were moved to another Fotki folder. Just Google Image: "VW Beetle speedo". Edited July 29, 2010 by Jon Cole

Thank you Jon! I will use those pics, and I'll make some sample for see the one that fit better. Thatnk you again about that, I didn't though a the speedometer. The speedometer will be seen, because the dash is "wrought iron"...
