mackinac359 Posted August 14, 2010 Posted August 14, 2010 I started this in '06, modifying the hood and sleeper. I decided to work on it again in July. The inspiration: Built in the old Madison, Tennessee factory and sold to a customer in Ohio steel hauling. My version: The Italeri Peterbilt 378 is the base kit, the sleeper was sourced from the Italeri 377. I modified the hood to look like a 379-119. The cab roof is resin from P&P resin. I cut the 63" sleeper down to a 48" size. Below you can see my famous "Clatterpillar" engine (A Detroit painted Cat yellow). A clipboard is on the dash, along with a clipboard and pencil on the seat. Maps and books are in the cab too. The red pin stripes are LineOTape. The yellow accents are from a Kit Form Services pin stripe sheet. Some of the red accents are from a Revell CanDo decal sheet. More pics and build info is on the "workbench" page on my site. Thanks for looking! Tim
highway Posted August 14, 2010 Posted August 14, 2010 Nice job as usual, Tim. I'm not that sure of your "Clatterpillar", though, but of course that might just be due to the fact I'm a Detroit Diesel fan!
Guest snapper Posted August 14, 2010 Posted August 14, 2010 That's some really nice paint and chrome work that you have there Tim - Colby
Jim B Posted August 14, 2010 Posted August 14, 2010 That's pretty interesting. I bet turning the real one can be a real pain, bu I bet it goes straight really well!
SpreadAxle Posted August 14, 2010 Posted August 14, 2010 That's pretty interesting. I bet turning the real one can be a real pain, bu I bet it goes straight really well! It would be a pain to remember to hit the switch and lift the axles on corners. That is one sweet truck, though.
Semi Trailer Mechanic Posted August 14, 2010 Posted August 14, 2010 Well Done Tim... I'm certain I've seen the 1:1 on the road before.
Kostas Parchas Posted August 14, 2010 Posted August 14, 2010 Hello Tim, Once again a very impressive model truck is done and of course once again the fotography is amaing! Congratulations!!! Kostas.
Bryan H Posted August 14, 2010 Posted August 14, 2010 We have a new winner! I'm certain this is my new favorite of the builds you have posted. I loooove big, multi-axle trucks. I particularly like the detail you put on the fuel tank. The paint looks very nice and smooth as well. Bryan
Old Albion Posted August 17, 2010 Posted August 17, 2010 Tim, Another great looking truck. I had a look through the build photo's on your web site and thought the photo's through the windscreen were great. On the full size truck would the three pusher axles steer?? Dave
The Modeling Hermit Posted August 17, 2010 Posted August 17, 2010 Someday I'm going to sneak in and steal your shrink ray. LOL That's another fantastic build.
mackinac359 Posted August 17, 2010 Author Posted August 17, 2010 Dave, According to the build sheet, the lift axles are not steer axles. Tim Tim, Another great looking truck. Blake Rogers Posted August 17, 2010 Posted August 17, 2010 that is amazing work i wonder what kind of loads she hauls?
whale392 Posted August 20, 2010 Posted August 20, 2010 I think I saw the 1:1 today heading into Kentucky on I-275 West at the Ohio/Indiana/Kentucky border loop.
CDA Posted October 14, 2010 Posted October 14, 2010 Tim, What yellow, besides CAT yellow, is a good match? Also, how do you get the paint to shine on all your trucks like that? Thanks, Maxydyne
Scalper Posted October 14, 2010 Posted October 14, 2010 Tim, What yellow, besides CAT yellow, is a good match? Also, how do you get the paint to shine on all your trucks like that? Thanks, Maxydyne I was thinking the same thing. The engine looks sharp. Great truck amazing work. must be a pretty heavy model.
mackinac359 Posted October 14, 2010 Author Posted October 14, 2010 I use "New Equipment Yellow" from Krylon. (generic Cat yellow). Depending on how rough the final clear coat is, I will wet sand or polish (3M rubbing compound) the finish eventually waxing (3M cleaner wax and Mothers Carnuba) it to a nice luster. superdog Posted October 31, 2010 Posted October 31, 2010 Wow , that is really sharp Tim,excellent paint and added details,is that a slab of steel on the back? holy lord, that's got to be at least 3" thick, but then again ,that is the truck for the job.....awesome work...Todd.
mountaindewd Posted October 31, 2010 Posted October 31, 2010 what is the purpose of the 7 axles when three of them dont touch the ground. Justin, The additional axles are used to distribute weight of heavy loads over a larger area decreasing the impact on the roads surface. The axles, not driven, are equipped with 2 sets of air bags, one for suspension and the other to lift them up off the ground when not in use to save on tire wear. Hence, they are called lift axles in general. The ones ahead of the drives are, AFAIK, called pusher axles as they are being pushed by the drives and the one behind the drives is called a tag axle as it is tagging along.
