DRG Posted August 22, 2010 Posted August 22, 2010 I know there have been several items written on using solder for exhaust systems but I can't find them for some reason. What kind of solder do I want????
crazyjim Posted August 22, 2010 Posted August 22, 2010 The stuff without the acid core in .062" diameter. Radio Shack carries it. Pull a length from th roll but don't cut it yet. Grab the loose end with pliers, hold the reel, and pull. That will straighten the solder. Then you can bend to the shape you want.

glenn Posted August 23, 2010 Posted August 23, 2010 How can you tell if the solder is acid core or not? the rods I make my chassis from is "silver solder" but its a bronze colour and really stiff just like solid brass rod but it's much cheaper.
Steve Keck Posted August 24, 2010 Posted August 24, 2010 As Crazyjim said, WITHOUT the resin core (equals solid core). The resin can drip out over time. And once the solder is off the spool roll it to straighten it completely. I sandwich it between two pieces of paperboard (like the backing from a note pad) to prevent tool marks and then press down with a hard straight tool or piece of wood. Roll at a 45 degree angle to the solder.
Scale-Master Posted August 24, 2010 Posted August 24, 2010 I have used the solder with rosin (not resin) core. There is also acid core, it is different. One trick is to soak the lengths of solder you cut for your pipes in hot water; you will have to reheat the water a few times. Add hot water to the solder, don’t nuke it… The heat will soften the rosin, some will drip out. You can force more out with compressed air and thin wire, (depending on how long your pieces are…). Lacquer thinner or carb cleaner helps with the clean up.
crazyjim Posted August 24, 2010 Posted August 24, 2010 I've discovered something else about using solder for exhaust pipes. I used the solder and put polished aluminum tubing for the ends. I didn't glue the solder or tubing to the chassis. The solder has dropped. It needs to be supported somehow or over time it will droop.
