oldscool Posted September 12, 2010 Posted September 12, 2010 Just looked through my 62 Impala kit and found this: There is also excessive flash on one of the chrome sprues for a new tool kit with only one production run on the molds. Some might say i am being too picky, but with the price of new tool kits being what they are we should get better quality control. Almost every Revell kit that I have bought in the past year has required me to use their parts replacement service for at least one part. oldscool
Zoom Zoom Posted September 12, 2010 Posted September 12, 2010 3 words Made in China The part is not warped, it's shaped that way to fit the top of the radiator support between the two front fenders. I've been buying & Revell kits since the '70's. The quality from China is consistently higher than what Revell had previously. Even more so when we talk about AMT products.

How many times have you had this problem with Tamiya kits? Me NEVER. Edited September 12, 2010 by RJWood
oldscool Posted September 12, 2010 Author Posted September 12, 2010 the radiator/core support on the real car is curved so it should be that way, at least across the top. no problems with flash in the kit i bought but i did have a body with broken A-pillars and a mis-shaped hood emblem. Revell took care of both and sent me replacements. Dave Well spank me and call me Sally. You are correct sir! Guess I should have test fitted before I had a fit:lol:. Shows that I'm not much of a Chevy builder. oldscool ( hiding face in shame)

Quality is more consistent than it was in the 80s-90s. I used to get a lot of kits from both companies that had poor chrome plating and warped bodies and chassis. The chrome has gotten much better recently. oldscool

oldscool Posted September 12, 2010 Author Posted September 12, 2010 i'm pretty sure that AMT was the only one to produce a Sunbeam Tiger kit. maybe they did and Alpine version too? Tamiya does have two kits of the Alpine A110, one stock and one rally version. i was loyal to Monogram for years with Revell coming in a close second. the thing i hated about Monogram and alot of Revell kits in the late 80's and 90's were the warped bodies, interior tubs or pans and chassis pieces. so glad that doesn't seem to be much of a problem anymore. Dave The Alpine A110 rally car is the one I want. I was very loyal to AMT and MPC in my younger days. oldscool

The Revell '62 Impala is a sweetheart of a kit; mine was of nearly the same quality of and went together like a Tamiya kit...and we all know any new full-detail (and even those don't have complete engines) Tamiya kit these days is 3X the cost of a Revell kit. I'm pretty sure Tamiya also outsources molds and production to lower-production-cost Asian countries.
oldscool Posted September 12, 2010 Author Posted September 12, 2010 Sorry if I caused some confusion. I was referring to the Renault Alpine kit. Referring to it as a Sunbeam shows just how oldschool I really am. Although I would like to have a Sunbeam tiger:) oldscool
oldscool Posted September 12, 2010 Author Posted September 12, 2010 This link shows the "Get Smart" kit to be buildable as an Alpine only: http://public.fotki....unbeam-925-200/ I know the show started with an Alpine & then progressed to a Tiger, & comapring the instructions to the AMT Tiger ones, shows that AMT based their Tiger on the Alpine kit. Too many identical parts for them not to. Now I don't know if AMT did a sencond "Get Smart" Sunbeam updated to a Tiger or not. Here's a link to the Tiger instructions from a 1970's reissue: http://public.fotki....-sunbeam-tiger/ In some of the shows he drove a Karmann Ghia. oldscool
