Ok, so I need another project like I need a hole in the head, but I started this livestock trailer last week some time and yesterday I managed to prime & paint some of it. I swapped the spokes out for some 10-hole disks. The hubs are cast resin by Daniel from Plaskit. The trailer will be painted with Dupli-Color Bumper Chrome over grey primer. I just have to make a final decision of the rear door, and decide how I want to cable the spare tire carrier.

Jim, I can't wait to see how the DupliColor looks. I've been stalled on mine because of the junk Krylon I have to strip from it.

Every time Ive used Krylon paint its been a bad situation, never had any good results from it. I like the Enamels but everyone seems to be going to Lacquers now and Ill have to learn that all over again...I feel your pain Highway.

Thanks. I've got a couple of issues with it right now. The biggest issue is there is a triangular gap between the roof & the nose bulkhead. Something isn't straight. Unfortunately, both pieces are already glued in place, so I'm going to have to try and figure out how to fill it.

Doug, Ace R/C took over from White Fang? Never knew that. Mine didn't come with decals either (reissue kit), so i picked some up from Dennis at Model Express. Special Appearance Decals might have them, too.

Looking good so far, and I like the idea for the paint.

One question I do have involves the prototype; as every other trailer has expanded in length, has this real trailer been made in a 48'-53' length? I was looking at combining two of them into a 48'er to throw behind either my stretched W900 or my stretched 359.

Doug, those DO look really nice! I might have to check into them.

Bardley, I do not know if this trailer was ever offered in 48' or 53', but Wilson does offer newer livestock trailers in those lengths.

Bradley, I did a quick "Bing" search for Wilson Livestock Trailers, and for some strange reason, all they show in new trailers are goosenecks for pickups.

I checked the used trailers link and did find some used ones and did find the big rigs. These are both from truckpaper.com.

This one is listed as a 53' long 102" wide 2009 model.

This is the 48 footer:

I included the links because there are some nice detail pics underneath the main pic.

One thing to keep in mind, though, as you can see with Jim's pics, the AMT kit is based off the older 70s style trailers, not the modern "punch style" trailers like these examples. I'm not sure when the designs changed, but the "punch style" trailers are the common trailer on the road today. I'm not saying the older style may not have been available in 48 and 53 foot models, and there may be a company still making them in the older style, so I'd say go for it. B)

The trailer will be painted with Dupli-Color Bumper Chrome

Don't think I've ever seen a shiney bull hauler unless it was brand new!!!!!

Most of them look like this.

Heres a couple of pics I found of the interior.

And here is a virtual tour of one. It takes a little while to load

Oh, Bumper Chrome isn't all that shiney. I mean it's shiney, but it isn't like the chrome that comes in the kits.

Thanks for the info and links on the newer trailers. At least I (and others) will have the info when the time comes to start building/updating these kits! (Yes, this is an admission that I NEED to start building/finish some projects again!).

So, in between a couple of other projects, I managed to finish my 1975 Wilson livestock trailer. Like most of my builds it's basicaly box-stock with a couple of add-ons. The finish is Dupli-Color Bumper Chrome, and the decals are from Model Express.

I swapped out the spokes for some chrome disks, and added some Plaskit wheel hubs.

FILE0045.jpg

I replaced the "wood" roll-up door with a "metal" one, and added a pulley system to raise the door. No, it doesn't actually work.

The spare tire is from the parts box, and I added a pulley system to this as well. This doesn't work either. Not sure what happened with the close-up pic. Looks like the camers focused on the house in the background instead of the trailer.

I haven't decided on a dedicated tractor yet. I was thinking of either this one, a GMC Crackerbox with a Detroit Diesel 6-71, or a Dodge LVT1000 with a 8V71. Not sure, but it does look good with the Astro!

There used to be a company here that used GMC Cracker Boxes then moved up to International Transtar II's and eventually to 352 Petes before bending to the will of their drivers and going with "Hoods"!

Seemed for the longest time as a kid, around here the livestock haulers used cabovers. But as you went further west, more conventionals.

I'm doing one like what was sitting behind the barn in the weeds at a farm I worked at when I was a kid. a Red Diamond Reo with a red bull rack. Scrappers cut her up and hauled her off a couple years back. :(

Thanks for the info. That validifies me using a Crackerbox; now I just have to find one. Oh, well, no rush I guess. I do have a Diamond Reo C-11664DFL that I could use, though.
