Ryan S. Posted October 22, 2010 Posted October 22, 2010 (edited) This seems to be a popular kit to post this week so I'll add to the fun and hope no one is burnt out on Mercs . I wrapped up Mr. Smoothie this morning and was able to snap some photos. What a fun build this was. Really went together smoothly (no pun intended). Workbench post here:On the bench Here's what all I did to make it my own: Krylon Satin paint: Exterior- Pistachio, Interior and accents- Jade and Ivory white Carpet flocked with black and white embossing powder Steering wheel from R/M '55 Ford F100 Scratched 8 ball shifter Swapped in the Revell parts pak Caddy 354 (decided on doing this before learning it was a Caddy motor in the kit in the first place, but I think this one looks good) Tires from the '60 Starliner Parts box steelie wheels M.A.D. Distributor Aluminum tube used to make the drive shaft. Kit one was a little too long with the motor swap. Lowered the front end by cutting the springs some. "Merc Parking Only" sign made using decal from AMT '49 Merc, sheet plastic and aluminum tube. Thanks for looking everyone. I feel like this is one of my best builds yet and am really happy with how it turned out. Cheers. Edited October 22, 2010 by Ryan S.
charlie8575 Posted October 22, 2010 Posted October 22, 2010 For satin paint, that's pretty glossy, which is good, it looks great like that. Charlie Larkin
hemi Posted October 23, 2010 Posted October 23, 2010 It looks great to me.The color fits the car good. Can one website reall have enough chopped top Merc's?
Ryan S. Posted October 23, 2010 Author Posted October 23, 2010 Thanks for the comments guys! The pictures with the flash and the way the light is coming in from outside gives the paint a little more shine than in "real life". It's definitely softer and not as glossy in person. As I was picking up a little this afternoon, after shooting the pictures I realized that I left the lake pipes off oops. I'll be installing them soon. Not that it makes that much of a difference, but I like the look of the lake pipes so I'll be adding them. Thanks again for looking!
oldscool Posted October 23, 2010 Posted October 23, 2010 I think it looks great:). That color does look good on it.
W-409 Posted October 23, 2010 Posted October 23, 2010 This is cool... I like that colour, satin colours are not my favourite, but this looks good. Nice wheel and tire choice, this one is very great looking Merc'. That engine looks good too. I like that Merucry Parking Only sign, I have that AMT kit, where it comes. Nice build, I like it.
Jesse D Posted November 22, 2011 Posted November 22, 2011 (edited) How hard was that 354 to get together? Edited November 23, 2011 by Jesse D
Ryan S. Posted November 22, 2011 Author Posted November 22, 2011 How hard was hat 354 to get together? Hi Jesse, The 354 went together pretty easy. I stripped all the chrome off of the block and heads, and filled some of the sink marks in the block where the seams come together. The only real issue I had was with how the bell-housing and transmission fit together. It wasn't a clean fit but with a little sanding it came together. You can't see it in the pictures but there's still a seam going down the transmission pan. I sanded and filled it, but got hasty and didn't do a good enough job. It turns into a pretty good engine when all detailed up so if you've got one you are considering building I say go for it! Cheers, Ryan
Jesse D Posted November 23, 2011 Posted November 23, 2011 A'ight, I sure will. I love the car, not to fond of the color but it fits I guess. Do these merc kits come that low? if not what had to be done?
Sixx Posted November 24, 2011 Posted November 24, 2011 I dig that new Merc...and you did an AWESOME job!!!!
