Not sure I'm doing it correctly but I use, for instance, a flat black acrylic paint and put in on very thin. I use my brush to thin it out getting the look I want.

I avoid "The Detailer" like the plague. I've had nothing but problems with Detailer flaking off, curling up, and peeling over time. I prefer to make my own.

All you need is flat black acrylic paint...I prefer Tamiya's XF-1. Then you can choose your thinner...cheapest is tap water, but I prefer Isopropyl (rubbing) alcohol most of the time. You can use Tamiya thinner, or other paint thinners/lacquer thinner if you want. Obviously each changes the character of how the wash goes on, can have an effect on the final appearance, etc. Experiment. It's cheap and easy...most likely you have all the stuff on your workbench already, and they all have uses outside of making washes.

I agree. Most of the time I remove the detailer and go back to Tamiya XF 1 and Isopropyl...Mixed 1 to 7,8,9,10...as Mark said..it does differ. I will also say the Detailer (black) works GREAT on defroster vents in the cowl. It does seem to have a purple tint over chrome..you must have chrome CLEAN for it to stick
