Dr. Cranky Posted December 12, 2010 Author Posted December 12, 2010 All right, maties . . . I've got the doors painted but they are drying so in the meantime I am working on moving the base to the table top photo studio and work from there, which makes it easier to take better pics . . . Something tells me all this hard work is going to pay off . . . which has put a big smile on my face!
JamesW Posted December 12, 2010 Posted December 12, 2010 Looks AWESOME. You've inspired me to work on my own DIO/Photo booth. I just need to collect the supplies.
Dr. Cranky Posted December 12, 2010 Author Posted December 12, 2010 Go for it, James . . . there's nothing like having a photo op that gets you excited about photographing your new models in a better light.
whale392 Posted December 12, 2010 Posted December 12, 2010 Be advised Virgil, I am taking notes on this build and plan to use some of your techniques in the future. While I have stayed quiet and lurked in this thread since the beginning, I felt a strong need to come forward and tell you just how I felt about this..............awesome! Thank you for always being the first to share some of your amazing builds and techniques with us; I for one am glad you do and consider you a true hobbyist/mentor for this hobby.
Dr. Cranky Posted December 12, 2010 Author Posted December 12, 2010 Aw shucks, Bradley . . . thanks, man, but that's what it's all about: sharing and having fun. Stay tuned in for more pics . . . OH and when you get going building yours, of course you will share lots of eye candy too!
Foxer Posted December 12, 2010 Posted December 12, 2010 I'm impressed by the window glass .. it looks like it's reflecting AND you can't see through it with any clarity.
Dr. Cranky Posted December 12, 2010 Author Posted December 12, 2010 Mike, yes, the windows are see through, some glass (with a few cracks here and there) and also clear styrene . . . my intention is to put some clouds in the background so that they show in the pics . . .
Zhu Posted December 12, 2010 Posted December 12, 2010 I’m speechless, which my family will tell you is a first. This is a truly amazing piece of work Cranky. And so quickly built too, it’s only taken seven days to create this masterpiece; it takes me that long just to open a kit box. Its threads like this one that makes this forum a great place for inspiration, information & above all a fun place to hang out. Thank you.
Dr. Cranky Posted December 12, 2010 Author Posted December 12, 2010 Thanks, Davey . . . I really appreciate it and I am honored by your words . . . I'm getting lots of progress done because once the painting is done, then the fun of super detailing will begin . . . you know, more oil and dirt on the floor, posters on the walls . . . some bits and pieces of furniture. A trash can or two . . . etc. . . etc . . .
Dr. Cranky Posted December 12, 2010 Author Posted December 12, 2010 Here are the doors . . . I am not happy with the level of chipping. I think it's too much and the doors should not be so far gone . . .
Dr. Cranky Posted December 12, 2010 Author Posted December 12, 2010 a bit more . . . Nah, man, it can't only be seven days . . . I feel like this one has been going on for about 2 weeks.
Dr. Cranky Posted December 12, 2010 Author Posted December 12, 2010 All of the elements are painted and so I'm mocking up a couple of rounds of pictures just to get an idea of where things need to be . . . (Keep in mind that all the interior elements are totally interchangeable, so you can really play around with this stuff . . . just like a dollhouse!) OH NO! Cranky's playing with dolls?
Tom Kren Posted December 12, 2010 Posted December 12, 2010 Your killing me with this! Great job im loving it BUT think the walls need more rust weathered look, too clean still.
Clay Posted December 12, 2010 Posted December 12, 2010 Absolutely amazing Virgil!! Great job and thanks for the inspiration!! I will definitely do one of these when I move.
Dr. Cranky Posted December 12, 2010 Author Posted December 12, 2010 Tom, yes, I still have to go through everything and add a little bit of weathering here and there . . . which is why I say I am far from being done. Besides, this base is going to grow and change over time . . . I haven't even applied any washes yet!
whale392 Posted December 12, 2010 Posted December 12, 2010 Well Virgil, as to the doors looking too scrungy for the walls; I would say take the walls down a few notches from their almost-too-clean look right now. Given the base and the doors, the walls look fresh and new (even the concrete blocks look fresh).
Dr. Cranky Posted December 12, 2010 Author Posted December 12, 2010 Bradley, yes that's a good idea . . . I will work on the walls first before I do anything further to the doors . . . I think I will apply a little bit of rust here and there with a sponge . . . less is more, right?
EH225M Posted December 13, 2010 Posted December 13, 2010 Virgil, I've been watching this build with glee over the past week or so. While I haven't read every reply to your pictures, I haven't seen any power outlets and/or compressed air lines on the walls. Yes, I know the doirama isn't finished yet - and when it is, you can send it to me!! I just wanted to say that every mechanical workshop I've walked into has a power outlet within easy reach and a compressed air line not too far away either. I just wish I had your skills at building something like this! James.
Dr. Cranky Posted December 13, 2010 Author Posted December 13, 2010 Thanks, James . . . yes, this one is going to have all sorts of details like that, including some cables and chains hanging from the ceiling, etc . . .
Nick Winter Posted December 13, 2010 Posted December 13, 2010 That is wow Were's a building inspector when you need em' Pretty Sure the enviromentalists wouldn't like that oozing slime Amazing, like always, just amazing, showed my cousin on the weekend, he works for a company that is used by insurance companies and corporations to rebuild and repair places asfter floods, tornado's ETC, he giggled and said "Been there before" Nick
crazyjim Posted December 13, 2010 Posted December 13, 2010 Yo Nick, I was wondering if you might be able to do me a personal favor. It's going into the 20s tonight because of a massive cold front front coming down from Canada. Could you try to keep the cold weather up there? Please? Thanks. Isn't Dr. Cranky's industrial base looking great?
Dr. Cranky Posted December 13, 2010 Author Posted December 13, 2010 Thanks, chaps, I will be back at the bench tomorrow morning to make more progress. Thanks for the kind words. Someone sent some cold weather down to Florida and Cranky's not happy about that!

Danno Posted December 14, 2010 Posted December 14, 2010 You guys can keep your snow. It's been hovering in the high 70's and very low 80's for the past week; just like we like it. Makes our "winters" easier to suffer!
GTMust Posted December 14, 2010 Posted December 14, 2010 What's wrong with snow? It's gives us an excuse (if we need one) to stay indoors and keep modellin'! Nice and warm and cosy.
