Greg Myers Posted January 13, 2011 Author Posted January 13, 2011 Where at? Front, back? How about the rear fenders? Keep 'em or go with something like the ones found on most Willies?
moparmagiclives Posted January 13, 2011 Posted January 13, 2011 If it were me I would cut in front of the rear fenders, bring them up next to the cab. and for sure keep the originals on it. Maybe even leave the little seem in the box side where you cut it, give it that "home grown" look.
Kris Morgan Posted January 13, 2011 Posted January 13, 2011 I myself would leave it. That is just me though.
voljeepx Posted January 13, 2011 Posted January 13, 2011 I agree with the others, shorten it. I would cut just in front of the forward edge of the fender and snug it right up to the cab. Otherwise it looks too long in the wheelbase for a gasser imho. As far as the fenders, aesthetically the stock ones look great, but from a racing perspective I think the Willys style are lighter and more aero friendly. Can't wait to see how this turns out!
Smart-Resins Posted January 13, 2011 Posted January 13, 2011 What style are you actually trying to nail as far as class goes. That if you want to be some what correct in the build could help determine this! Personally, I would probably keep the fenders the way they are as they help show what the truck is. For the bed, I like altereds, so saying that I like the notion of moving the fenders forward slightly, then whack of twice that amount in the bed length. Also to help with the idea, do a engine set back. These were some of the things the guys did for show as it would help wieght transfer to the rear wheels for traction, but also would allow ubber cool wheelies. Like as you have in the pic of the willys. But, that is a lot of work shortening the frame, changing motor mounts, fitting the fenders, removing bed details maybe for proper fit, wacking the bed working on the firewall etc. So ask yerself, do you feel lucky today? Oops, sorry. That was a Clint Eastwood moment. LOL.
Greg Myers Posted January 13, 2011 Author Posted January 13, 2011 What style? I grew up in Tucson, early '60's , AHRA, so just about anything goes. Gasser, altered, hot rod.
Guest Posted January 13, 2011 Posted January 13, 2011 I agree with Dave. Drop the rearend down and go with it. If you're determined to shorten the bed,I would take it all out of the front.
Terry Sumner Posted January 13, 2011 Posted January 13, 2011 Dave is correct....to compete in any Gas class, the wheelbase must remain stock. Pickups could be gassers of course, but had to have a fully serviceable bed that was at least 36" long. The Panella Bros pickup in the photo appears to be stock from the wheel to the front of the bed with the length taken off behind the wheel. This was the "legal" way to shorten the car. The fender is either a highly modified stock fender or maybe a whole new one grafted on. Take any length out of the wheelbase and you're instantly in an Altered class.
MikeMc Posted January 14, 2011 Posted January 14, 2011 I've looked and looked at this one for a while now, I think Daves thought of dropping the rear down is the right period look...I for one would love to see an injected big block rather than blown...with that sweet tilt front 8 tall chrome stacks would look killer.....As for the bed...just where it is now.. .. .yep this coming from zona man...don't shorten this one
Draggon Posted January 15, 2011 Posted January 15, 2011 This is looking great so far! I agree with the others abut dropping the rear down a bit. What about leaving the tailgate open and mounting a parachute on it? I think that might make it look more balanced overall.
