First WIP of the year

This is my first car build since I did the 50 Ford pickup awhile back.

Got both engines painted as I will use the other one in something eventually. Also cleaned up the body and got rid of the emblems and front marker lights and remembered the antenna base and the badge on the trunk. Cutting out the rear wheel openings was a piece of cake by scribing them from the inside with an Exacto blade.

Think I'm going with pearl white on this one and use the kit decal panels with a flat black hood.

After building a couple of planes building a car is like coming home again.

Is that the new Dart reissue? Looks like it's shaping up to be a killer build... the radiused rear wheel openings are the tip off! :o

Yeah Chuck, it's the new 2n1 reissue . I'm not going the "as delivered" replica route with it but will do it as a personalized race car the way I would like to have one.

Got a little more done today. Some engine detail painting and the body is ready for paint,

Is this a killer stance or what?

IMG_0390.jpg

Painted the headers and trans pan on the 440 with Tamiya metallic silver. Going for the Jet Hot coated look on the headers. The trannys are painted with Humbrol aluminum

IMG_0392.jpg

Had to sand the bottom of the 440 oil pan as I found a circular ejector pin mark after the first coat of paint. Also got the distributor and valve covers drilled for wiring on the Hemi. Now if I can just get some painting weather.

only thing that will make that stance look better is when you gun it and that front lifts up about a foot

decide on a colour yet ?

Got a little more done yesterday. Since this is a modernized Hemi Dart, I added subframe connectors from Evergreen stock.

IMG_0394.jpg

Painted the rear axle to match the engine. It still gets some detail painting. I have sanded the heck out of the slicks and can't get rid of the mold seams

IMG_0397.jpg

Some more work on the 440. I like the starter detail on these engines.

I'm getting a little modeling time in this morning so I did the leveling trick on the intake like a couple of others here have done.

Now the more observant of you may be asking "where's the distributor mount ?" I cut it off and will put it back on later because rather than add styrene to level the bottom, I am going to sand the one side down until it's level. The reason for this is after looking at pics of the real thing I think it stands too tall above the valve covers.

I've also got primer and a few details painted on the chassis

OK, got the intake where I want it. Don't know if it is really accurate but it looks the way I want it to. I painted it while it was still on the sprue not thinking that it would be cut up.:P

I only have time to do a little work at a time. I'll try to have something more interesting for the next update.:o

Since I have the day off and it started snowing again B), I am getting some more time at the bench. First off are a couple of quality issues that I haven't seen anyone else mention s maybe it's just my kit.

One slick has chunk missing from the bead area:

IMG_0408-1.jpg

The front bumper has a raised line going across it on one end and there was a lump at the bottom of the license plate recess:

IMG_0409.jpg

Too overcome this I am going to strip and sand the bumper and paint it silver to represent a glass one.

Here's the manifold with distributor mount and final coat of paint:

Should have some more progress pics tonight but still can't do any outdoor painting.

Keep them Hemi Darts coming everybody,

That manifold turned out GREAT!!! As soon as I saw the problems your having with the tire and bumper I went and checked mine and have no such issue. Must have gotten a hair in the chrome process and ran out of material on your tire... ;)

Just my luck that I get one with these issues ;). The tire looks like a chunk has been cut out with a knife rather than a short shot but it's barely noticeable with the wheel inserted.

Wow, we've got Grumpy and Cranky, as I sat reading this one of my Godsons (who are visiting for a couple of days) told me I was Grouchy. Man, it sure is a lot of work being a grown-up, having all these nicknames to keep track of. Well, back to the forums.

;)

Had another day off today ( don't ya love the schedule that one has to work in the retail biz) so got some more done. Now have a rolling chassis:

IMG_0411.jpg

It's painted with Humbrol light gray aircraft color. The leaf springs and steering linkage is painted with Model Master nonbuffing gunmetal. The spindles and control arms are MM acryl semigloss black as are the rear shocks. Fuel tank is Humbrol aluminum.

Also got the interior floor sprayed with Testors cheapest flat black:

IMG_0412.jpg

I ordered the M/T valve covers from Speed City and they look great in the pics on their site so the engine won't be done until I get them. I'm thinking about doing the roll bars in orange - what do you think? Keep in mind the car will be pearl white with the red and orange panels from the kit decals.

Keep them Hemi Darts comin' boys,

grumpy gus
