Jamez Posted February 6, 2011 Posted February 6, 2011 I recently purchased this kit: My intention was to build as a T/A model, but have noticed a major issue with it, aside from the poor fit of the 1 piece intake/cylinder head casting, it has the incorrect location for the distributor. The notch at the front is what I am referring to... The 340 engine that came in the T/A had the distributor on the back of the engine, not the front. Now it is true that the air filter will cover the distributor, but I have wired this one and you will see it. The Exhaust manifolds are also incorrect. So I'm left with a few questions, mainly just looking for your thoughts on which direction you all would go with it. I see it as I have 3 options.... 1. Build as a T/A clone with a 440 six pack for an engine 2. Build as a R/T with a 440 six pack for an engine 3. Cut that tab off and drill a new hole at the back for the distributor and use the incorrect exhaust manifolds. I really wanted to build a Panther Pink T/A, but I would almost rather build the R/T than have incorrect manifolds show. Comments and thoughts?
CEKPETHO BCE Posted February 6, 2011 Posted February 6, 2011 Many people will disagree with me, but why don't you build it to look good without worrying about little details that do not make a difference in the drivebility of a model car. It will never be a million dollar number matching survivor (lol) because it's just a model, so just make it look good without worrying about what kinda engine is in there. Like i said, a lot of people will not agree with me.
slantasaurus Posted February 6, 2011 Posted February 6, 2011 I would build this kit as an R/T and get this kit http://www.revell.com/model-kits/cars/85-2596.html to build as a correct T/A.
mrmike Posted February 6, 2011 Posted February 6, 2011 You could fill in the distributor hole in the front and drill a hole in the back in the proper position and mount the distributor in the back of the manifold.
highway Posted February 6, 2011 Posted February 6, 2011 I would build this kit as an R/T and get this kit http://www.revell.com/model-kits/cars/85-2596.html to build as a correct T/A. I agree, get the 1/24 scale T/A and just build this one as an R/T.
ChrisPflug Posted February 7, 2011 Posted February 7, 2011 Or swap out the engine with a decent 340 Tough to make a decent looking model out of this particular kit anyways with the awful slab-sides to the body- the older issues of the Monogram 1/24 seems to have more potential than the recent converted die cast
Bruno Posted February 7, 2011 Posted February 7, 2011 Or swap out the engine with a decent 340 Tough to make a decent looking model out of this particular kit anyways with the awful slab-sides to the body- the older issues of the Monogram 1/24 seems to have more potential than the recent converted die cast Exactly, this is IMO the worst '70 Challenger kit out there. I am currently building a panther pink T/A using the old Monogram kit, it's a nice kit and it has all the parts needed to build a correct T/A, including the 340 six pack + the body looks way better. I would build this one as a R/T and get a Monogram later to build the T/A, or find a 340 six pack engine from the Monogram T/A kit or the Revell AAR Cuda kit.
Casey Posted February 7, 2011 Posted February 7, 2011 Exactly, this is IMO the worst '70 Challenger kit out there. I agree. This kit is a mish-mash of big and small block parts, and the kit itself is based on a die-cast, with inaccuracies throughout. Pick up a 1/24 scale ex-Monogram '70 Dodge Challenger T/A from before '97-ish (when they modified the tooling to work with the then-new '70 'Cuda AAR) and build it right. The older issues of the kit are actually less expensive than a new $18.00 Revell kit, too.
