whale392 Posted February 21, 2011 Posted February 21, 2011 Looks like the guy you got the bumpers from tossed in a pretty nice set of taillights too!
SuperStockAndy Posted February 21, 2011 Author Posted February 21, 2011 Yup- I knew somebody would notice that
whale392 Posted February 24, 2011 Posted February 24, 2011 (edited) Paul, thanks for the info. But I do have to disagree to your coloring info, the Race versions were the darker colored motors. Mopar still offers the colors as spray cans and the 'Race Hemi Orange' contains more red tint than the 'Street Hemi Orange' does. Both of dads original HemiCars wear the Street Hemi color, and the race block we had was darker (not just from age either). I too have seen the max Wedge blocks with the crossbolted mains, but being as we were talking Hemi I.D here again, I left that out. Thank you for adding that info though. RO23 and WO23 were the Mopar B-body Super Stock Hemi call-outs(in 1965-66), along with the BO29 for the Barracuda, if memory serves me right. The intake was indeed called the Rat Roaster. Dad still has a complete intake with plates sitting in his storage locker (a 40' semi trailer full of Hemi and big-block parts), along with the later Maxi Hemi Magnesium crossram intake, 3 1968+ 2x4 inline intakes, 2 1966-67 2x4 inline intakes, and an Arlan Vanke modified 1966 unit. This isn't going into the various other big-block intakes as we are talking Hemi here. Nice to see you join in on this build and contribute positively with info and encouragement. Andy is doing a great job with this build, and if we can help him 'nail it', we have done a small but valuable service to him. Edited February 24, 2011 by whale392
SuperStockAndy Posted March 6, 2011 Author Posted March 6, 2011 Go figure. I superglued the engine together and I can't pull it apart to repaint it. :\
SuperStockAndy Posted March 6, 2011 Author Posted March 6, 2011 Well guys, This is heading off to paint so this is the last time you'll see it like this. I just wish Hobbylinc would get Plum Crazy.
ChrisPflug Posted March 13, 2011 Posted March 13, 2011 Paul, thanks for the info. But I do have to disagree to your coloring info, the Race versions were the darker colored motors. Mopar still offers the colors as spray cans and the 'Race Hemi Orange' contains more red tint than the 'Street Hemi Orange' does. Sometimes memories fade as well The "Race Hemi Orange" color from Chrysler is a bright, almost yellow orange while the "Street" is much redder- the same color as a hi-perf wedge engine. Worked on plenty of 1:1s in my time as well If I think of it I'll snap a couple pics of 1:1 engine parts painted with the Mopar "restoration" spray paint described
whale392 Posted March 13, 2011 Posted March 13, 2011 Chris......I'll have to do the same, grab up the cans I have here at the house and see which is which .......(this has got me thinking about the colors now!)
6bblbird Posted March 14, 2011 Posted March 14, 2011 FYI as there WAS a bit of mis information, the race hemi was the lighter color (my 340 is currently incorrectly painted that color and a friend had a real 1 of 50 or 80 sum depending on sources, hemi darts.) and the Max Wedges were also cross bolted and once in a while a max wedge block has squeaked out as a replacement block for a std 413 or 426. (personally seen a 413 max block in a motorhome with no serial # but that was in the 80's so there's no telling who installed it at what point) Not intended to start a peeing match here. Just posting what I know. Also, the race hemis were produced in 64,65,67 and 68 as far as I know. 67 is a WO23 (?) Paul Where did you see a cross bolted Max Wedge engine? NASCAR use, maybe? I've never seen cross bolted 413 or 426 wedge engines in street cars or race cars. I know that World Products currently produces a cross bolted wedge block, but the Mopar factory???? WF
6bblbird Posted March 14, 2011 Posted March 14, 2011 Oh yeah, I forgot to add this..... "Race Hemi Orange is a noticeably lighter color than Street Hemi Orange. Do you guys do any research before posting these "facts"??? WF
Danno Posted March 14, 2011 Posted March 14, 2011 Awright you guys! Grab your spray cans and meet in the middle of the street at high Noon; we'll have a shoot-out to decide who's right and who's ... sprayed.
ChrisPflug Posted March 14, 2011 Posted March 14, 2011 (edited) Oh yeah, I forgot to add this..... "Race Hemi Orange is a noticeably lighter color than Street Hemi Orange. Do you guys do any research before posting these "facts"??? WF Yeah- certainly would want to make sure you did plenty of research on such an important subject before posting inaccurate information leading to a real tragedy It's been a few years since I looked at one "in person" and I'm going of memory rather than "research" here but I'm pretty sure the Max Wedge blocks I've seen were pretty standard, not cross bolted, the differences being the bore notches and the threaded hole for the oil pickup being a size larger None of which being particularly relevent to building a model car Edited March 14, 2011 by ChrisPflug
6bblbird Posted March 14, 2011 Posted March 14, 2011 Yeah- certainly would want to make sure you did plenty of research on such an important subject before posting inaccurate information leading to a real tragedy So, when someone asks a question, Its' o.k. to just "make stuff up" or post totally false information? I might just be one of those wacky modelers that likes to have proper and correct details on my models whenever possible. I also know that there are some out there that build whimsical creations with no regard for accuracy and realism. That's o.k. too. I still think that you should try your best to only answer questions that you really know the answer to or post links to the correct info. WF
W117monte Posted March 14, 2011 Posted March 14, 2011 Why do you guys turn every post about mopars into a pissing contest about "facts"? Kind of thread hijacking isnt it?
ChrisPflug Posted March 14, 2011 Posted March 14, 2011 Seemed to be a lull in the thread I'm very guilty of retaining all sorts of pretty much useless information and enjoy buiding replica stock models after what's probably excessive research with all kinds of correct details I, however, can appreciate that the majority really isn't as hung up on the details or arcane trivia, but view modelling as a fun hobby and can think a model looks great even with "glaring errors" This particular thread is even more ridiculous in that the subject isn't even a real "factory" car- these were slapped together with the intent many of the "correct details" would be replaced by the owner and raced Interviews from the time confirm the engines were hastily slapped together with the full expectation they would be torn down and blueprinted by the racer before competition- kind of makes "factory color" seem silly.
whale392 Posted March 14, 2011 Posted March 14, 2011 (edited) Hey Chris, I was finally able to go grab my cans of Factory paint to compare side-by-side. You are correct, the 'Street Hemi Orange' is the Redder shade of Orange. The Max Wedge cars and the Race Hemis are the lighter shade. Guess I need to quit playing with my FOX Mustangs as much, head back to Florida, and spend some more time with dad and his Mopars (and to be fair, my Mopars as well.......they send me letters telling me they miss me!). Andy; the Dart is looking good by the way. You say you are waiting on the paint (is Plum Crazy that hard to find?). What brand are you using to paint the car? I might have a can here, or access to a can I could send you. Edited March 14, 2011 by whale392
SuperStockAndy Posted March 15, 2011 Author Posted March 15, 2011 Andy; the Dart is looking good by the way. You say you are waiting on the paint (is Plum Crazy that hard to find?). What brand are you using to paint the car? I might have a can here, or access to a can I could send you. I'm using Model Master Plum Crazy Metallic Lacquer, and Hobbylinc just got it. Thanks for the offer too, but I'm not allowed to give out my address on the internet.
Foxer Posted March 15, 2011 Posted March 15, 2011 I somehow lost the updates to this thread. It's coming along very nicely I see! I saw your comment about super gluing the engine and needing to get it apart again. There are Debonders you can get that will soften the bond on super glue. Probably not cheap for you, but just so you know.
SuperStockAndy Posted March 15, 2011 Author Posted March 15, 2011 Thanks Mike, but I think I'll leave it the way it is, because I'm happy with it. I'm sure one of these days I'll build a completely correct Hemi Dart
whale392 Posted March 16, 2011 Posted March 16, 2011 I can understand the address thing Andy, so it's ok. As long as you are able to get the paint and proceed with the build, all is good. I was just offering if you needed it (as 'Northeast Indiana' isn't terribly far from 'Southwest Ohio' and shipping to you would be easy).
SuperStockAndy Posted April 6, 2011 Author Posted April 6, 2011 Sorry for no updates guys, haven't ordered paint yet. Here is what it will kind of look like: And thanks to all that have looked and/or commented on this build.
Dragracer Posted April 6, 2011 Posted April 6, 2011 the picture looks good, hope you get the paint soon, I want to see this car when it's done
mrmike Posted April 7, 2011 Posted April 7, 2011 I like what you have going here and it is looking good so far, Andy! I even like your story, too. I say, build it the way you want and don't worry too much about the details. Some of the details describe by others can be informative, but can't be applied to a model car. Keep up the good work!
SuperStockAndy Posted June 16, 2011 Author Posted June 16, 2011 (edited) Well after 2 months, my paint is FINALLY on the way! Once it's painted, I'll be able to get it finished. That's what I hate about being a kid--you can't just hop in a car and drive to the hobby shop to get paint! Edited June 16, 2011 by Android
