baddgass Posted November 29, 2011 Posted November 29, 2011 I have my N.H.R.A. License Chris and looking for a ride. Man this thing is out of sight, all the workmen ship. All i can say is THANKS!!!!!!!!!
Mooneyzs Posted November 29, 2011 Author Posted November 29, 2011 Thanks for the compliments on the progress here. Feel free to hop in and take it for a spin lol. I would love to get my NHRA license one day.
futurattraction Posted November 29, 2011 Posted November 29, 2011 Very impressive, Chris. Your patience and perseverence are inspiring, and the quality of your work is off the chart.
eviltwincustoms Posted November 30, 2011 Posted November 30, 2011 That looks really nice.... the washers make it look like actual lug nuts now. I was going to say the same thing, if you painted the studs or lugs... taking them off and on, would only pop the paint off. Not sure what axle you are wanting to say you are running. But I have a STRANGE Engineering Catalog, and they have the perfect circular emblem. So I am planning on scanning it in and using that for my hubs. Much better than the rectangular one you find on the internet. If interested, when I get back from the Philippines in 2 weeks I will send you the scanned picture.
Mooneyzs Posted November 30, 2011 Author Posted November 30, 2011 Scott.... thanks buddy for the kind words. I feel I am making progess slowly right now but with the little work I was able to accomplish tonight I sould be able to start the rework by this weekend I am hoping. I had to sand the inside of the tires down a little more to get the rims to not fit so tight and was able to start adjusting the rear end by narrowing it just a smidge to get the tires to tuck up next to the chassis so the body would fit them under the wheel wells. Bart... Thanks on the compliments. One of the other reasons I was using the washers is because when I polish the wheels I didn't want the nuts to scratch the rim up so I figured that the washers would protect them plus on my muscle car the lug nuts I have for my Weld Wheels has washers behind them. I agree with you about the painted studs. sometimes I wish we could get some of the bolts in more than just Brass. But they work so I have no complaints. That sounds great on the circular emblem. I have no clue what I was going to for the center on the hubs, plus I haven't a clue what brand of axles the Army Car ran. since you brought that up I am going to look at my pics to see if i can see an emblem on them or not. Enjoy your trip over to the Philippines and we can touch base when you get back.
gasser59 Posted November 30, 2011 Posted November 30, 2011 I'm really enjoying the comments about this build and wanted to add that painting the studs, washers and nuts probably wouldn't work too well but maybe blueing them as in gun blueing would be the ticket. I don't know much about it other than it can be done at home with chemicals and solutions. The blueing wouldn't wear off like paint would. Just a thought.

Interesting, you bring up a very good point and I do remember someone posting the solution... but remembering where that post was... is the Million Dollar question. I assume it creates a patina.... Oh you know it may have been Romell's Pro Mod Charger in the Workbench section, because he was originally going to use this Blueing process as well on his brass chassis. I have never done it, and don't know what the end result looks like to even say if it would wear off... Maybe something to try out and see? Edited November 30, 2011 by eviltwincustoms
futurattraction Posted November 30, 2011 Posted November 30, 2011 (edited) This might have to be touched up on occasion, but I wonder if just using a black magic marker on the studs would work. I'm sure it wouldn't be as permanent as blueing. It would mimick the color of studs and it wouldn't build up like paint. I don't recall if you've said, but do you get your nuts and washers from scalehardware.com, Chris? Depending on what size you're using, SH has brass and SS nuts and washers, so the SS would give more the appearance like chromed lug nuts and backing washers. Just a thought... Mooneyzs Posted November 30, 2011 Author Posted November 30, 2011 This bluing process sounds interesting. I have to ask what color would you guys suggest on the studs, nuts and washers? i did a search on it and it seems from what I found from one company you use this solution and believe you mix it and let it soak for a certain amount of time. I believe t said it would get get jet black in about 30 mins. My only dilema is that i have already put the studs in the hubs with loctite but i should be able to break them free. I am half tempted to buy a bottle and try it on some sample parts. It looks as if this stuff is about 20 bucks for an 8 oz bottle. What do you guys think?
Mooneyzs Posted November 30, 2011 Author Posted November 30, 2011 Scott....I do get my nuts and bolts from Bob at Scale Hardware when I had ordered these bolts for the studs he only had them in brass. I just went to his site and see that he has them in nickle plated brass now. I am debating if i should order them and swap them out. Probably would look better. The washers I have I got from micro mark so I would have to do something with them being brass
MicroNitro Posted November 30, 2011 Posted November 30, 2011 How about leaving the studs and washers brass they kinda have a gold airadated (not sure how that is spelled ) look. Then using something to make the nuts grey or black.
Mooneyzs Posted November 30, 2011 Author Posted November 30, 2011 (edited) Jim... I could easly do that. I also just took a look on summit racing and ARP has studs that look to be yellow zinc plated. So I think I will leave studs as they are because the brass looks to represent zinc plating.... Color is some what similar. I could also do the bluing to the lug nuts. Thanks for the suggestion Edited November 30, 2011 by Mooneyzs

I have a chemical solution called "Blackenit" that darkens brass and nickel, If you want to remove those studs just apply a little bit of heat from a soldering Iron. They will come right out and then we could darken them its really fast and is very durable.
gasser59 Posted December 1, 2011 Posted December 1, 2011 There you go. This forum never ceases to amaze me.
eviltwincustoms Posted December 1, 2011 Posted December 1, 2011 There you go. This forum never ceases to amaze me. Yep I have to agree with you Brad, this site I have to say is a very friendly bunch of individuals willing to help out anyone!
Mooneyzs Posted December 1, 2011 Author Posted December 1, 2011 Hey Gabriel I may have to take you up on that offer. I am debating if I sould just cut new studs and start fresh with them. the reason I was saying that is that I looked up Blackenit and saw that it can be purchased from Micro Mark and an article there said that they wanted you to have it clean of dirt or grease. Plus with my crazy work schedule not sure when I would be able to meet up to do it. Brad and Bart.... I can't agree more with the both of you that we have so many friendly people here willing to help others out. Its one of the reasons I enjoy this model site so much. its a great group of people we have here. The gears have been turning in my mind a little bit. after taking a look at this blackening process, it is making me wonder if it would be worth while to do this process to my headers instead of paint. Guess I should do a test sample first to see if I like how it turns out

Mooneyzs Posted December 2, 2011 Author Posted December 2, 2011 (edited) Gabriel, Thank you. Well I was able to sit down at the bench tonight an put a little more time into this build. Tonight my plan was to get a little work done that I needed to to the front end. I have been meaning to redo my front spindles somewhat so that the new rims Jim turned would slide onto the axle. So with what I was able to accomplish tonight, it looks like I am at the point where I am ready to start the rework of the chassis tomorrow night and get the engine moved forward as well as moving the mounts for the raidus rods. With that said, here are the pics from tonights progress.... I started out tonight by taking my spindles off and getting they new axles ready: So what I did was I took some tube and had to sand the diameter down just a smidge to get to fit into the mounting hole of the rim. My plan was to use an 00-90 bolt inside of the axle to mount it to the spindle. So I cut off the stock spindle axle, drilled a hole and then tapped the hole. I cut down a 00-90 bolt to make a stud out of it and threaded it into the spindle. Next I threaded the inside of the tube and proceeded to thread the tube on to the axle. when I had it almost all the way on the stud I took my Weld-On #3 glue and put it on the areas I wanted to glue and finished threading the tubing as far as I could go bonding the tube to the spindle. I wanted the axle to be strong so I thought this would be the best way to accomplish that: Here is the finished spindles with the new axles installed: Test fitted into the rims: Edited July 25, 2017 by Mooneyzs
Mooneyzs Posted December 2, 2011 Author Posted December 2, 2011 (edited) Here is a Shot of the rolling Chassis after I had cut down the rear axle a little bit to get the rear tires tucked up against the chassis: Side View: I then decided I wanted to add a little spacer to the front axles as I found that I had some play/slop between the front axle and spindle. So I took Shims and glued the pieces to the axle in which I will go back and trim it down by cutting and sanding to shape. I will be letting this dry for the night and picking it back up tomorrow drilling the hole for the bolt to go thru. Then I can start with the chassis re-fab: Thanks for following along and stay tuned for more progress over the weekend. Edited July 25, 2017 by Mooneyzs
gasser59 Posted December 2, 2011 Posted December 2, 2011 This is looking great Chris. So nice to see a rolling chassis even if its going to be reworked some. Those rear meats are massive. Can't wait to see your weekend progress.
Mooneyzs Posted December 2, 2011 Author Posted December 2, 2011 Brad.... I will have to take a shot of it from behind so you can get the true effect of the Tires Jim... Thank you and thanks for all of your work you have done for me so far. I am hoping to maybe sit down and draw up a few more parts that I have been thinking about. Thanks Virgil! Mike... Thank you and for all of your help so far. Its much appreciated. I think I sould be picking up some purple pond tonight or tomorrow and will post some picks of that when I get to it. But though I might as well get to soaking while doing the chassis fab work.
W-409 Posted December 2, 2011 Posted December 2, 2011 This sure looks good! This needs to be the best Army Vega, I've seen. It looks as realistic as the 1:1 version, I think. Great job with it, those front spindles just look right. Really great job, I really enjoy about following this build.
