curt raitz Posted April 9, 2011 Posted April 9, 2011 One of the themes for the 2012 NNL West is "V-12's" I'm curious...where would one find V-12 engines? not particular to scale, subject (cars, trucks, boats...) or medium (plastic, die-cast, resin...) thanx for any input
diymirage Posted April 9, 2011 Posted April 9, 2011 i want to say several of the world war II fighter plains ran V12s rolls royce made them (or was that an inline 12?) and they are available from several resin casters aswell as in partspacks in 1/24 or 25 scale (on a side note VAG offered a W12 engine in several of its products including the passat)
Bernard Kron Posted April 9, 2011 Posted April 9, 2011 Early Years Resin makes a Lincoln flattie (http://earlyyearsresin.webs.com/engines.htm middle of the page):
MikeMc Posted April 9, 2011 Posted April 9, 2011 (edited) http://www.autoblog....not-mini-power/ This would be a kool start........Google V12 s Audi TDI come up from the R8 http://www.youtube.c...bed/mutb7KgA9NM" http://www.wawu.eu/ Edited April 9, 2011 by Stasch
Jairus Posted April 9, 2011 Posted April 9, 2011 Ferrari Daytona - Fujimi Ferrari Superamerica - Revell 1940 Lincoln - Monogram Allison 1710 V-12 engine - AMT To name just a few.
LDO Posted April 9, 2011 Posted April 9, 2011 Airfix 1/24 P-51D Mustang has a Rolls-Royce Merlin. Not a bad looking engine. I have this kit. I got 2 of them for 30 bucks total. You may or may not find such a great deal Airfix 1/24 Ju-87 Stuka has a Jumo 211 Ferrari Enzo has a V-12. Offered by Revell and Tamiya. Hasegawa's Jaguar XJS has one Revell's NAZCA M-12 has a BMW V-12. There may also be an engine in their old 850i and 750i. Not sure on those two. Tamiya's Mercedes-Benz S600 Coupe and 600 SEL sedan have V-12s That's all I can think of for now.

Jim Gibbons Posted April 9, 2011 Posted April 9, 2011 The 1/16 Entex (Bandai) 1937 Packards. Any of the Ferrari 250 GTOs that have engine detail such as the old Aurora/Monogram releases.
Modelmartin Posted April 9, 2011 Posted April 9, 2011 Just get out your razor saw and start splicing v8s and inline 6 engines together! Years ago I made an Offy V-12 from four AMT Indycar engines and a 1/16th Honda V-12 from 2 CBX engines. How awesome would a Ford SOHC motor be as a V-12?
Jim Gibbons Posted April 9, 2011 Posted April 9, 2011 Union, Heller Testors Ferrari 512S Heller, Union Ferrari 330 P4 Ed Those would actually be considered "boxers" as they're horizontally opposed 12's rather than in a Vee. The VW Phaeton (and also the Bentley/RR) engines are W-12's. Don't know if any of those are modeled, but likely in diecast. It's possible that the Liberty V-12 is available in WW1 aircraft in 1/72 or 1/48 scale from a company like Roden or Eduard. The way I look at it, a 12's a 12, no matter the configuration!

highway Posted April 9, 2011 Posted April 9, 2011 I'm surprised (unless I missed one ) no one mentioned another one of the obvious V-12 powered exotics other than Ferrari, LAMBORGHINI!! The Monogram Countach has a full detail engine in it.
Crazy Ed Posted April 9, 2011 Posted April 9, 2011 Those would actually be considered "boxers" as they're horizontally opposed 12's rather than in a Vee. (big ol' snip) Hi Jim The Ferraris' were 60 degree V's. Could you be thinking of the Porsche 917's? They were air cooled boxer 12's Ed
Jim Gibbons Posted April 9, 2011 Posted April 9, 2011 Hi Jim The Ferraris' were 60 degree V's. Could you be thinking of the Porsche 917's? They were air cooled boxer 12's Ed You are likely right; I'm not an expert on Ferrari engines. I was thinking of the 917 era cars, and thought that the Ferraris had a similar boxer design. That and I was thinking of the 1/16 512BB model I built eons ago. Was that a boxer design or angled? That's what I love about this forum; I never stop learning!
Modelmartin Posted April 9, 2011 Posted April 9, 2011 I think the cold winters in the grand state of Minnesota has frozen your brain cells... What!
LDO Posted April 10, 2011 Posted April 10, 2011 IIRC, Ferrari once referred to their Flat-12 as a "180 degree V-12" so you could try to sneak one by that way.
cnaind Posted April 10, 2011 Posted April 10, 2011 1/24th Packard Merlin 1/24th Rolls Royce Merlin V-12 page
Jairus Posted April 10, 2011 Posted April 10, 2011 Union, Heller Testors Ferrari 512S Heller, Union Ferrari 330 P4 Ed These are indeed correct V12's, the first a 5 litre and the second 3. The Ferrari boxer 12 first appeared in F1 and Can-Am cars about 1970 but didn't hit the production line until the 512BB 1976. Fujimi has a nice kit of one and of course the Testarossa "cheese grater" car became mainstream when one appeared in the TV series "Miami Vice". The engine in those is NOT a V type engine. And yeah.... I forgot that brilliant Monogram Lambo V12 in the Countach. Neat kit actually, affordable and a good catch Highway. The vision of a V12 SOHC Ford's exciting to ME too!
Raul_Perez Posted April 10, 2011 Posted April 10, 2011 Well, my old friend...I guess it kind of depends on what you're planning on putting it in... But for me, the real question is "what are you doing already planning a build for the 2012 NNL when I'm still finishing the ones I had planned for 2007?" Depending on what you're looking for...I may have a donor kit for you to play with... Give me a call when you get time and we'll see what's stashed away it the garage...
Modelmartin Posted April 10, 2011 Posted April 10, 2011 Here are a couple of obscure ones! The old Hawk 1/24th Mercedes W163 Grand Prix car. And didn't the old ERTL Payhauler have a big deisel v-12 in it?
LDO Posted April 10, 2011 Posted April 10, 2011 Here are a couple of obscure ones! The old Hawk 1/24th Mercedes W163 Grand Prix car. Cool! I have one of those. I'd guess that engine is a pretty nondescript lump, though. And didn't the old ERTL Payhauler have a big deisel v-12 in it? V-16! Blake Rogers has one. I'm trying to talk him into building a pulling tractor with it, but I'm not sure he's going for it.

Jairus told me I had a good catch remembering the Lambo, but how did I, diesel running through my veins, forget the Detroit Diesel V-12?!?! Lee is correct, the Payhauler haul truck does have a V-16 Detroit Diesel, but both the drag race trucks from ERTL, the Bandag Bandit and the other's name escapes me right now, did have a Detroit Diesel V-12 powerplant!

Hey Raul Don't have any plans...just lookin' to see what options I could have thought the forum would be a good place to start... So far it's been fun.... definitely interested in seein' what you may have buried in your stash c'ya
