I'm almost done with a complete remodel of my hobby room and I found the bricks I was looking for. They're called MAGIC BRIK. No "c' in brick. You paint the base surface the color you want the mortar to be, lay down the mask, mix the dry powder "bricks". and spread it evenly over the mask. When dry, you peel the mask and there's your bricks with the mortat joint. I've used the stuff to create a scale version of the Veterans memorial we built in Winfield, IL.

The stuff was wonderful and I think I'll order a batch. There are several suppliers online.

I don't know what you mean with "distress it", Rob. I would imagine you could apply some paint and/or washes to make the bricks and mortar look older. Magic Bric is used in the dollhouse industry and I don't know if those people do weathering.

Yeah. Pretty good looking stuff isn't it, Mercman?

Yeah this stuff is fool proof. B) I managed to get it done. What was time consuming was all of the cut outs in the template. :P

Here's a pic of the Winfield (Illinois) Veterans Memorial that I built over 20 years ago using the Magic Bric method. The model was built to show the town commissioners what we planned to do and then we used it in our fundraising efforts.

The model is pretty dusty, but the magic Bric is still intact.
