crazyjim Posted June 10, 2011 Posted June 10, 2011 My wife gave me her old laptop for the shop. It has Windows XP. I have the forum set up so I get email notices on something I posted a message. When I click on the message and it takes me to the forum, the window that opens is small and I have to click the button to make it larger. My machine in the house always comes up full screen. I don't know if I need to change my settings on the forum or on the machine itself. Can anyone offer advise?
highway Posted June 10, 2011 Posted June 10, 2011 Jim, both of my computers, my main desktop and my laptop, run XP and do the same thing. I'm guessing from this statement, I have the forum set up so I get email notices on something I posted a message. When I click on the message and it takes me to the forum,... you are opening the forum through the link in the email notification, right? I just checked mine and opened the forum from the email and mine does the same thing. When I first click Internet Explorer, that is the only one that opens full screen, but any links I open after always come up in a small window that I have to maximize for full screen. As for changing any settings, I don't know if there is a way to change it or not, but it would be nothing to do on or with the forum, the windows opening is through Internet Explorer. I'll check through settings on my machine and see if there is a way to change it in Windows.
MrObsessive Posted June 10, 2011 Posted June 10, 2011 Jim, are you using Firefox or IE? I know in Firefox if I close the windows "smaller" they will reopen that way the next time I use Firefox. BTW, I'm running Vista on both my laptop and my desktop and they work the same way. I think IE should work the same way...............try leaving the window maximized, close the browser, and then reopen and see what happens. When opening up links via email, this should work the same way. You could broaden the screen using your mouse to see if the laptop "remembers" the way you closed the window per the size you left it. HTH!
crazyjim Posted June 10, 2011 Author Posted June 10, 2011 That's the issue, highway. I don't know how to change IE settings. I'm told IE is garbage and I should switch to firefox. IE works, so why change?
MrObsessive Posted June 10, 2011 Posted June 10, 2011 Jim, if you're running IE8, there's a little "gear" icon the upper right hand corner of your screen. That's how you change the settings. I was looking through mine, and didn't see anything about keeping the windows maximized. For the record, I'm no big fan of IE no matter what version Microsoft comes up with-----------I find Mozilla to be much more user friendly.
highway Posted June 10, 2011 Posted June 10, 2011 That's the issue, highway. I don't know how to change IE settings. I'm told IE is garbage and I should switch to firefox. IE works, so why change? I tried Firefox, and I really didn't like it, I stuck with IE too! I looked in the settings for IE to see if there was a change and a setting to change for it to run maximized and tried it then went back to my email notifications and opened the forum from the link again. It STILL opened in a smaller window, so looks like when you click on links to open them, you'll just have to maximize them yourself. I'll keep looking, though.
crazyjim Posted June 10, 2011 Author Posted June 10, 2011 I don't see a "gear", Bill. Yes IE8. At least I'm not the only one with this issue. Marcia uses Firefox and this was her machine. I'll go through Firefox and see what happens.
MrObsessive Posted June 10, 2011 Posted June 10, 2011 Jim, here's a screen shot of what I see on my screen...............you can see the gear in the upper right hand corner of the pic. That's what you hit if you want to change the settings.
crazyjim Posted June 10, 2011 Author Posted June 10, 2011 My screen doesn't look anything like that, Bill. I went through Firefox and the forum comes up full screen. Has to be something with Internet Exploder!
MrObsessive Posted June 10, 2011 Posted June 10, 2011 Granted, I don't have anything on there such as wording or whatnot------when I needed to download IE8 I did so for security reasons. I never did go in and put such things in as Bookmarks, Homepage, other texts, etc. I just don't like IE for anything except that it HAS to be on my system.
crazyjim Posted June 10, 2011 Author Posted June 10, 2011 I'm going to ask Marcia about nthis issue when she gets home. For now I have logoff this machine and go to the house. It's Friday and you know what that means - pool, pizza, popcorn, and WWE Friday night Smackdown!
crazyjim Posted June 10, 2011 Author Posted June 10, 2011 Me again, Bill. I checked my computer in the house and that little gear is there. I'm going to ask Marcia to look at it and try to figure it out for me.
MrObsessive Posted June 10, 2011 Posted June 10, 2011 Okay Jim, I tried opening up links in my email using IE as my default-------and the windows do open up maximized if I previously left them that way when they were originally closed. I left them smaller before I closed them out, and when the links were clicked they reopened in the smaller window. So it may be an XP thing...........I'm not familiar with XP as I never had it for an OS. I jumped from Windows 98SE right in to Vista when I got my new desktop in '07. Talk about culture shock! One reason you may not see IE as I posted on your screen, may be because I have my windows in "aero" mode. This gives you a nice array of colors and such that I don't think are available on XP. Anyway, I think that may be a foible of XP that may not be able to be corrected with IE..............another reason why I like FireFox!
MikeMc Posted June 10, 2011 Posted June 10, 2011 IE7, IE8 and now IE9......IE8 works best on this forum, IE7 is trouble with the "new" board and I got rid of IE9 as it has a few issues with this forum.Upgrade to IE 8 and when you close your browser in full size it will reopen full size......Thats the square boxes up on the top, between shrink completely or exit I have both XP on my tower and Vista on the laptop.....you can have mozilla/firefox and get rid of chrome. I will not ever go back to firefox as with my security and firewalls...and all current updates..IE8 rocks
Mr. Moparman Posted June 11, 2011 Posted June 11, 2011 Jim, here's a screen shot of what I see on my screen...............you can see the gear in the upper right hand corner of the pic. That's what you hit if you want to change the settings. That is IE 9! Had 8, switched to 9 today.
MikeMc Posted June 11, 2011 Posted June 11, 2011 That is IE 9! Had 8, switched to 9 today. Now you switched to IE9...does the popup on this board go only to profile or does it show all options from profile to gallery? Mine would only let me go to profile
Mr. Moparman Posted June 11, 2011 Posted June 11, 2011 All the forum stuff, everything no problems detected.
whale392 Posted June 11, 2011 Posted June 11, 2011 (edited) When I switched mine to the 'updated' IE9, I lost the ability to see all of the icons and prompts. Sometimes it won't even load pics. I am using Google Chrome now, and it works fine for that, but has its' own issues. One of the BIGGEST things I have encountered so far (both using Chrome and IE) is the 'SQL server fail' message and inability to continue with what I have typed. It happens constantly here, and many of my responses have not gone through due to it. I type slow, and just decided to not re-try versus trying to type it all out again only to have the SQL server fail deny me a second, third, fourth time. Edited June 11, 2011 by whale392
