SuperStockAndy Posted June 15, 2011 Posted June 15, 2011 Just about lost my left eye a couple of minutes ago. I was cutting a piece of plastic....then BOOM my blade decided to break, hitting my forehead RIGHT ABOVE my left eye Make sure your blade isn't bent while cutting or else it will break!
SuperStockAndy Posted June 15, 2011 Author Posted June 15, 2011 what kind of blade? i once had a stainless steel Olfa blade shatter while i was cutting some cardboard boxes and one of the pieces of the blade stuck into my lower eye lid and i was wearing glasses too, it went right under the edge. IMO the stainless blades are brittle and tend to break or shatter easily. i don't bother using them at all anymore, either the X-acto style or the Olfa It was a Revell blade. It WAS pretty old and dull, so I was probably stressing the blade too much. I will be getting some Excel blades soon though.
Ryan S. Posted June 15, 2011 Posted June 15, 2011 I'm glad you are ok but I think the bigger lesson here it that eye protection is a really really good idea when doing model stuff. I've started wearing a clear sunglasses style, though admittedly only usually when using the dremel but I might start wearing them a little more often now! Be safe everyone!
Nick Winter Posted June 15, 2011 Posted June 15, 2011 Did this Monday, lesson learned, don't hold a fresh #11 blade down when installing it. Good news is, I didn't get any blood on my project I was going to BMF Nick
charlie8575 Posted June 16, 2011 Posted June 16, 2011 Your blade shattered like that??? I'd return it to Revell along with my lawyer's phone number. That's way too close for comfort! Glad to see you're okay, though. Just do be careful and don't apply too much pressure. Charlie Larkin
RodneyBad Posted June 16, 2011 Posted June 16, 2011 Dang, that was a Close call. I've had the Dremel cutting wheels Break B-4 Worst part of using a cuttin wheel is your looking right down the cut line in direct line of the blade if it breaks. I've just started using reading glasses to build, I feel a little bit safer but a pair of safety glasses desk side can't hurt.
SuperStockAndy Posted June 16, 2011 Author Posted June 16, 2011 Uuuum, I don't really want to take legal action... My eye is fine, so yeah.........
Chuck Most Posted June 16, 2011 Posted June 16, 2011 YIKES! Never had the blade shatter like that (knock on wood), but I did once have a chunk of plastic I was cutting fly up and go into my eye. Instinctively, I blinked, and the hunk ended up under my eyelid. Getting it out was NOT pleasant...
Mr. Moparman Posted June 16, 2011 Posted June 16, 2011 (edited) Story sound familaiar, one morning before school I was trying to get a fire extiguisher off a rollbar. Dumb me, I put all my wieght aganist that knife. Guess What? Blade slipped, caught my thoumb, left a one inch gash. about 4 centimeters deep. Boy, you should of saw my mom when she asked why I had a paper towel over my thumb and I said I cut my thumb with the knife. Not pretty! Anyhow, i did not need stiches, it healed up well in about two weeks. Edited June 16, 2011 by Master Modeller
Mr. Moparman Posted June 16, 2011 Posted June 16, 2011 Darn! I keep putting centimeters! Millimeters is CORRECT!
Junkman Posted June 17, 2011 Posted June 17, 2011 (edited) About 25 years ago I slipped with an X-Acto knive while carving - away from me, see, I'm not daft... Slipped right into my thigh at high speed, the entire blade right up to the hem. I had no idea how much a man can bleed, there was literally a puddle forming on the floor. I was single and by myself, living out in the forest in a hunter's cabin, so I took a stapler, stapled it shut and drove to the hospital for having it stitched up. The scar is still visible.
