Harry P. Posted July 27, 2011 Author Posted July 27, 2011 Tonneau looks great. What is the material? How did you make the dash lights? They look perfect. Tonneau is a piece of newspaper. I laid a piece of plastic wrap on the model, then a piece of newspaper that I first saturated with Future. I formed the tonneau into shape while wet. After it dried I added another coat of Future and several coats of acrylic paint. Then I took it off, cut and trimmed to final shape, and glued it back down. The bead along the edges is thread that I glued down along the edges after I trimmed the cover to shape. The "snaps" are straight pins. The dash lights are just short lengths of round styrene rod. The mounting brackets are made of cardstock, and there's a cut-off straight pin at each end, going through the bracket and into the rod.

So, essentially, it's papier-mâché?
Harry P. Posted July 27, 2011 Author Posted July 27, 2011 Cool technique on the tonneau. So, essentially, it's papier-mâché? Sort of. Instead of flour and water I used acrylic (first Future, then acrylic craft paint). So it's one piece of newspaper, two coats of Future and several (3-4) coats of paint. The cool thing is, it's still flexible and feels like a real tonneau.

Looks like something I'd like to try on top of plastic up tops for my 30s convertible kits instead of fabric. That could provide some realistic and subtle wrinkles.
Harry P. Posted July 27, 2011 Author Posted July 27, 2011 These are the paints I use (there are a couple different brand names... I get them at Hobby Lobby. Depending on the brand, they cost between 99¢ and $1.69 or so apiece. But they're all pretty much the same exact thing, so I buy the cheap ones!
Foxer Posted July 28, 2011 Posted July 28, 2011 This keeps looking better and better ... and quite interesting. I need a tonneau cover and maybe this is worth a shot.
Junkman Posted October 15, 2011 Posted October 15, 2011 Not trying to push you in any way (or let's presume I'm not), but how are you getting on with this build?
Shardik Posted March 3, 2012 Posted March 3, 2012 (edited) Harry, this is ammazing. Glad I spotted yours before I got too much further on mine. I had elaborate plans to make new stone shields for the headlights from brass sheet. Your solution is probably going to save me a good five hours work , and they look fine! The tonneau cover is another thing I wasn't sure how best to deal with -now I have one more good idea to add to the arsenal! Thanks for being so generous with your explanations of your techniques. Dragline Posted March 4, 2012 Posted March 4, 2012 It's looking full blown to me Harry. Very nice indeed sir. This kit is enjoying a bit of a resurgence. Bob
Harry P. Posted March 4, 2012 Author Posted March 4, 2012 Not trying to push you in any way (or let's presume I'm not), but how are you getting on with this build? Sorry Christian, for not answering you sooner. I thought this thread had gone to where old threads go to die and today I see it's been bumped back to the top! As is typical of me, I get all psyched for a project, go at it hot and heavy for a while, then usually lose interest as a newer project gets in my head. So this one has basically been sitting since my last progress report, which is pretty dumb, because it's so close to finished. All I have left to do is paint the hood and get the grille shell replated (Chrome Tech, probably), and add the last few small details. I'll probably get this one finished soon. I don't want to have it sitting there forever, 95% finished.
Dr. Cranky Posted March 4, 2012 Posted March 4, 2012 Wow, I am all caught up on the fun and excitement with this build, Harry, thanks for sharing the wonderful eye candy and some of the great tips like that cover. Keep it going, chap.
model.maker Posted March 15, 2012 Posted March 15, 2012 My first Post here doing a search for Airfix Bentley Builds. Exceptional work , Are you the same HarryP or Harrypri that used to post over on Scale motorcars? Anyway I'm currently also working on an Airfix bentley with extra detail work, I'll keep following your build . Sean

model.maker Posted March 15, 2012 Posted March 15, 2012 Thought it was! Anyway I for one would love to see this project finished ,any plans to ,you've done exceptional work! Sean

Sean I plan to finish it. Right now it's basically done except for needing the radiator shell replated; I'll have to send it out to get that done. Aside from that, just a few small details to install and it's finished. I will finish it! In fact a fellow forum member is making me a wooden display base for it right now.
stump Posted March 17, 2012 Posted March 17, 2012 Aww Harry, I feel your pain man. I probably would have just 'given up', had one of my builds been devastated by such a horror. It's so pleasing to know you are getting it back on track. This build has been great so far, I want to see it done. As I guess you do.
deja-view Posted March 18, 2012 Posted March 18, 2012 I thought all you Bentley fans might like this: Hosted on Fotki

Yeah, that whole "falling off the workbench" episode was a real problem, to say the least! But unlike Humpty Dumpty, I did manage to get it all together again!

But unlike Humpty Dumpty, I did manage to get it all together again! That's the spirit Harry, get back on the horse and soldier on as they say. You got it close enough to "finished" that you can get some pics...? I mean, it's not really my cup'o'tea, but a well built model of any genre is always pleasing to view.
