JTRACING Posted July 22, 2011 Posted July 22, 2011 thought I'd start this amt kit. nice kit highly recommended starting to detail the engine bay not that anyone would notice but for once I made the correct firing order for the plug wires lol body color will be cream.
Monty Posted July 22, 2011 Posted July 22, 2011 My compliments on that engine - just the right amount of wear and grime. Would you mind sharing how you achieved that? I'm seeing clamps on the hoses and a very well done windshield washer fluid bag, so you're off to a great start. Your plug wires look good, too, and if you don't mind a tip for your next engine, make or buy the plug boots that go to the distributor. Small things that make a big difference. After seeing what you've accomplished so far, the rest of this car should be spectacular. I look forward to seeing your updates!

I normally add plug boots but I ran out of small black tubing. I left them unglued so can always add some in later for weathering I just coat the engine in brownish mix of artist oil. let it set up a bit, then wipe of most of it and feather it around with a big soft brush.
Dr. Cranky Posted July 22, 2011 Posted July 22, 2011 Amazing weathering on that engine bay. Beautiful, keep it going.
fairlaneranch Posted July 23, 2011 Posted July 23, 2011 Man! This is my kinda thing!!! LOVE FAIRLANES!!!!! keep it up! looks FANTASTIC!!!!!!
Ryan S. Posted July 23, 2011 Posted July 23, 2011 Wow, that engine bay looks great! Excellent weathering. What do you use for the heater hoses and the clamps on them?
sak Posted July 23, 2011 Posted July 23, 2011 (edited) Looks badass so far. I see you have the washer fluid hoses over the firewall. You might have to make a notch for those on the body shell so it fits right though. Keep going. Edited July 23, 2011 by sak
RodneyBad Posted July 23, 2011 Posted July 23, 2011 WOW!! what a Excellent Start.. Engine bay and weathering looks Fantastic...
Monty Posted July 23, 2011 Posted July 23, 2011 OK, question for you: did you scratchbuild your upper shock mounts? Jeff K seems to be building this same kit and has posted pictures of his engine bay, but it doesn't have the pieces yours has on top of the shock towers. Double D has built this car before and says AMT apparently forgot to address this area. I dug out my '66 Fairlane 427 kit to check, and they don't mention anything about them in the instructions, and there are no parts like that on the sprues.
Randy D Posted July 23, 2011 Posted July 23, 2011 Hi James, What a terrific job on the engine bay!! That is some of the most realistic weathering I've seen here. Randy
JTRACING Posted July 24, 2011 Author Posted July 24, 2011 thanks all, slow going but added a few more bits. added the carb and fan belt. also a few wires to the wiper motor Wow, that engine bay looks great! Excellent weathering. What do you use for the heater hoses and the clamps on them? just some vinyl tube form a motorcycle kit. thin wire for clamps. Reeves Racing Posted July 24, 2011 Posted July 24, 2011 Great stuff, I'm looking forward to seeing the rest of it.
Chuck Most Posted July 25, 2011 Posted July 25, 2011 The wiring, the tag on the upper passenger's side corner of the firewall, the subtle, realistic weathering... oh, this one is GOOD! The fact I love Fairlanes makes it even better.
Darbo Posted July 25, 2011 Posted July 25, 2011 Great work as always, is this one going to finish up looking like the '57 Chev ?
Dragracer Posted July 25, 2011 Posted July 25, 2011 The engine compartment looks great!, really like the detailing & weathering. Can't wait to see more!
