Hi guys, so im wondering what type of spray paint is best for painting my cars? I dont like to buy the testors spraypaint because is seems to be expensive for the amount of paint im getting. Im just a kid so i want to get the most amount of paint for the money. I buy Krylon fusion for plastic. It is only about 7$ at walmart and you get more paint then the testors sprays, so to me its a better deal. The krylon fusion paint works nice on my models and has a nice finish to me, and requires no priming! But im wondering what type of spray paint is best for models besides testors. Im thinking about trying Rustoleum but i dunno if it works on modles, since it is made for metal?

So what paint do you recomend for me and if that paint needs priming?

Thanks

I usually use duplicolor paints. So far had no problems with them and they don't cost an arm and a leg like some other brands. Their primers work very well and cost a lot cheaper than tamiya primers. Tamiya also makes some nice spray enamels, but they are a bit costly for the amount you get. If you are planning on spraying more than one layer of colored paint, make sure you stick to one kind of paint. For example if you are painting a car with enamel paint and then doing stripes on top of it with a lacquer, the enamel underneath will crack. Same thing will happen if you use lacquer clear over enamel base. Duplicolor makes mostly lacquer paint, but they do make enamel paints too so make sure you read the label before buying/using.

Oh and as for primer, you don't NEED to use it, but it is highly recommended that you do since primers generally help paint stick to the surface. I usually use duplicolor sandable primer. They are lacquer primers so you can spray enamels, acrylics, and lacquers over them without worrying about it cracking. Now if the model is molded in colored plastics (red or green for example) then you should use duplicolor primer sealer instead of sandable primer. Hope this helps.

Rustoleum will work too, and I've had decent results using Rustoleum over bare plastic. I also use Duplicolor a lot, and have started using Tamiya. It's been years since I used Testor's, as I never had good results with their spray enamels. I haven't tried the newer Testor's sprays.

Something to keep in mind about primers/sealer. A lot of models come in white plastic, which is great but a number do not. With colored plastic you run the risk of bleed through if you don't prime. Also some of the more transparent colors like red, and yellow will change color completely depending upon what the base coat is. I prime as a guide coat for sanding the body and then put one last coat on just to even out the color.

so i was looking at the duplicolors and i only saw one primer, it was a grey. i have had problems before with grey primers showing through. i tried to spray red testors over testors grey primer and it bled through. i saw a rustoleum that said for plastic and it was an off white kinda color. can i put duplicolors over this? or over any of the other rustoleum primers ?

I wouldn't. I've never tried that specifically, so I'm just speculating here, but since Duplicolor is so hot, I'd be sure to use Duplicolor primer with it to be sure everything works like it's supposed to and you don't craze the plastic.

Duplicolor does make a "white sandable primer" It's nice stuff. I have had no trouble finding it at auto parts stores. Maybe you can look a little more?
