Back in 1977 when I was learning to drive, my Mom had a '69 Javelin SST with a 390 and auto. I LOVED that thing as it could still squeal the tires despite the fact that it was an eight year old car, and probably about 80,000+ miles at the time. Of course I only squealed the tires when I was with my Stepdad--------never with my Mom in the car as that would have been the end of me driving her car!

There just something irresistable to a 16 year old with 315 horses under his right foot!

My Stepdad at the time also owned a pretty neat car...........a '69 Lincoln Continental Mark III which was also no slouch in the horsepower department. I got to practice driving in that quite a few times as well, learning to deal with the knuckleheads that made up the Washington D.C. Beltway back in those days!

Actually, my Mom's car. 1970 Dodge Dart Swinger with a 225 and 3 on the tree. Not a ton of power but would still do a nice four wheel drift on the dirt roads. I would'nt mind having that car today.

FYI to Mr. Obsessive: The number of knuckleheads on the D. C. beltway has increased exponentially!

Boy guys that sound great. Well growing up, My uncle had a auto shop and cousin had a body shop. So I was around cars all my life. By 12 yoa I was driving cars into and out of the shop, I was helping do head job and the like. I was also over helping and do body work. I can't tell you how many 55 - 57 Chevy's we worked on, take the crome off and throughing it away. Taking the front ends off and putting tilt glass frontends on. 57 Fords, GTO's, 69 COPO Camaro, 69 Z28, Road Runners Chargers and the list go's on.I was very lucky in driving a long list of cars. The first car I drove was a 1950 Hudson Hornet H. The first car I owned at 14 yoa was a 1939 Dodge Deluxe, flat head 6 with 3 on the tree. When I turned 16 i bought a 1966 Dodge Charger with a 361 cid(later a road runner 383 cid). I was the first owner of this car in 1971 as the Dodge dealers wife drove this car since 1966 as a demo. Since then I've had a loaded 67 Sport Fury with a 440, 67 Formula S Barracuda 273/ 4 spd, 68 Plymouth GTX, 49 DeSoto woodie wagon, 68 road runner, 73 road runner. At this time I own a 1953 Chrysler Deluxe (331 cid Hemi) 1966 Plymouth Valiant 2 dr coupe ( 360 mopar performance with a 4 spd, 1974 Charger Rally with a 400 cid and a auto trans & a 1981 Imperial

I'm loving all these stories .. especially the car choices for all the "not a car guy" Dads!

So now, I have to give tales of MY two kids that HAD a car guy for a Dad. both my Daughter (the car gal) and my son (semi car guy) learned on my '87 944 that I had for 8 years. My son never once asked to borrow it. My daughter wanted it ALL the time. Sometimes she did get it as she could drive it better than I.

my excitement driving Dad's vehicle came at age 12.

My pop was out of town, and I found the keys to his pickup truck.

so I 'borrowed' it and drove into town. I grew up in rural Colorado,

and thought it would be fun to take a cruise.

Wrong.

I got pulled over by a police officer who knew me.

His son and I were classmates in the sixth grade.

after a long lecture, he told me to take the truck home, and never let him catch me driving around in it again.

dont think he ever told my Dad, but it wasnt too long after that, Pop started letting me drive on longer family

trips, mostly on the interstate.

I eventually told my Dad that story, along with a few others I didnt think he knew about.

He just smiled, but didnt say a word.

va rt 301 crosses the potomic river theres a texaco gas station we lived there 6 years i had my choice of 10 to 25 cars to TEST DRIVE plus the truck stop across the river was real fun... at 14 years old

Gosh. If you had to admit in school that your father drives an R16, you were beaten up for it.

Oh I know! They've added more lanes which has resulted in more folks going to and from Knucklehead City!
