Old Sprinter Posted February 10, 2012 Posted February 10, 2012 Holy cow Joe, I just looked at this for the first time. This is a great project. Your scratch building skills are perfect. I have no idea how anyone can get such great detail, like you're doing, in anything smaller than 1/8 scale. I can't, but you that can must have eyes like an eagle and hands like a surgeon. I will follow more closely for sure.
Prostreet Posted February 12, 2012 Author Posted February 12, 2012 (edited) Thx guys, Ok got the frontend mount and supports done, the 2 brass pins slide into the front of the chassis. Turned out pretty good i think, The frontend of this body isn't 100% square so it was hard to get it perfect. Tommarrow i start cutting the doors and frontend off . wish me luck lol. tyrone Posted February 12, 2012 Posted February 12, 2012 your work looks awesome Joe. I've never done a large scale build, build when I cut mine apart I use a sharp hooby knife and make the first couple of cuts with the blade and then, use the back side of the blade, with slow steady strokes, I'm sure you'll do fine... great job so far pal...
Mooneyzs Posted February 12, 2012 Posted February 12, 2012 Joe nice work bud. hey my idea for getting yor doors cut is using some fine line tap and putting a few layers over each other to use as a guide. And as others mentioned here take your time getting started with your scribbing and it will turn out great.
Prostreet Posted February 12, 2012 Author Posted February 12, 2012 Thx. Guys, appreciate the ideas. Will see what happens.
Prostreet Posted February 12, 2012 Author Posted February 12, 2012 Frontend and doors are off, It worked out great and everything lines up and gaps look good. now i will start thining the doors and building the panels and mounts.
comp1839 Posted February 12, 2012 Posted February 12, 2012 looks like you did a fine job there, joe. i'm so glad it worked out well. these can be the times you sweat the most.
Magic Photos Posted February 12, 2012 Posted February 12, 2012 WOW Joe great job on the front end this build is coming a long great.
Prostreet Posted February 13, 2012 Author Posted February 13, 2012 (edited) Thx. Fellas, One thing i have to figure out. Since cutting the body apart there is some flex between the rocker and the rear of the body inturn pulling up on the A-pilliars and front of roof and not letting them sit all the way down where they need to. I either need to do more bracing in the back of the chassis or maybe pin the A-pilliars to the A-pilliar bars so they stay down where they need to be. Edited February 13, 2012 by Prostreet
tyrone Posted February 13, 2012 Posted February 13, 2012 man.... this is looking great.. I love it now that you have it all cut open to see all the bracing on the inside...
Prostreet Posted February 13, 2012 Author Posted February 13, 2012 Thx. Tyrone, I went back to the bench last night and fixed the A-pilliar issue, All i needed to do was add a small piece of styrene in the body under the rear support i made and that fixed it.
futurattraction Posted February 13, 2012 Posted February 13, 2012 That looks great, Joe. What a fantastic job you did on cutting the body. Gaps look perfect. I can't wait for more updates...
Old Sprinter Posted February 13, 2012 Posted February 13, 2012 I agree with these guys, great job on cutting the doors and the whole car for that matter. I'm getting an education watching your build. Ken
jmpsebring Posted February 13, 2012 Posted February 13, 2012 A great time to say "fantastic". As a new guy on this site, your build along with all the other 1/16th promods are inspirational. On the other hand...wheels, tires, hubs, struts, rear ends, engines, bodies, etc....my visa is burning up!!. Big $$$ to go fast
eviltwincustoms Posted February 13, 2012 Posted February 13, 2012 Thx. Fellas, One thing i have to figure out. Lookin more and more like a pro builder with every update you post! I am playing catch up, but it sounds like your issue is you don't have any body mounts in the back like you need to hold the body up. Because the tail end is going to be heavier. After you add the mounts this will resolve your issue you are having with the sagging.
Prostreet Posted February 20, 2012 Author Posted February 20, 2012 Thx. Bart, Well i'm running into a problem and need some help/advice. Did the drivers door hinge today and when i open the door it hits the front clip even with the body gap you see in the first picture, I would really like to have the gap tighter. the 3rd picture shows the door as far as it will open with the clip on. I figure it will be displayed with the doors open and the clip off 99% of the time, but trying to figure out another way to do the hinges where it will work.
jmpsebring Posted February 20, 2012 Posted February 20, 2012 What a great point to reach. Chassis looks great with the body wrapped around it.
eviltwincustoms Posted February 20, 2012 Posted February 20, 2012 (edited) Joe show me a pic of the front clip, I want to see that leading edge where it meets the door. Have you thinned it down as well?If this hasn't been done this may be your issue. You can thin the outside edge of the door (leading edge) just enough to feather it so it doesn't show... There are a few tricks you can do body wise. I can't tell, it may be the angle in which the pic was captured, but you may have hinge issues. Based on the picture it looks like your hinge may be a bit off and it is letting your door sag causing the bottom leading edge to kick forward and hit the front clip when it opens up.... Prostreet Posted February 20, 2012 Author Posted February 20, 2012 Bart: There is no sag in the door, That is one thing i made sure of. The front clip and doors have been thinned down, So your saying feather the inside of the front clip some to give more clearence? I was thinking of different ways to do the hinges but mine is pretty close to everyone else's. I want that clip to door gap tighter for when the car is all put together so i may just have to accept the fact that the door can't open with the front clip on. I'm off from work today so i'm gonna mess with it some more.
Prostreet Posted February 20, 2012 Author Posted February 20, 2012 Here's a picture of the hinge point.
comp1839 Posted February 20, 2012 Posted February 20, 2012 joe, the hinges need to move out further. the arc you are creating is moving forward instead of inward. moving the hinge point out will correct the issue. or just remove the front first. looks fantastic!!!!!!!
eviltwincustoms Posted February 20, 2012 Posted February 20, 2012 (edited) Yep angle the front edge of the front clip on the inside, and then feather the outside edge on your door. See if this helps before you have to move your hinge points. Edited February 20, 2012 by eviltwincustoms

Great point Dave, that makes sense... I never did like geometry and angles. Hated doing actuated trunk lids and stuff for car stereos because of this specific reason.
